Celeste Maloy triumphs in special House primary, replacing retiring Utah Rep. Chris Stewart.
Attorney Celeste Maloy Wins GOP Special Primary for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District
Exciting news! Attorney Celeste Maloy has emerged victorious in the GOP special primary for Utah’s 2nd Congressional District. This paves the way for her to replace Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT) after he steps down from Congress later this month.
Maloy secured her spot in the general election with an impressive 38% of the vote, as the race was called almost a day after the polls closed on Tuesday.
Previously, Maloy had won the Republican nomination during the state’s GOP convention in June. However, she faced a primary election against former state Rep. Becky Edwards and former Utah GOP Chairman Bruce Hough, who had gathered enough signatures to appear on the ballot. Notably, Maloy received the endorsement of Stewart himself, as she had served as his chief legal counsel.
If Maloy emerges victorious in the general election, it will be a historic moment. She will become the first female candidate to represent the 2nd Congressional District since 1997. This district encompasses a significant portion of the western area of the state, stretching from the outskirts of Salt Lake City all the way down to St. George in the south.
With the seat being considered safely Republican, Maloy is highly likely to win in the general election scheduled for November.
Stewart’s Retirement and Maloy’s Future Opponent
In late May, Rep. Chris Stewart announced his retirement from his House seat. He cited his wife’s health as the reason for his early departure from the position he has held for 10 years. On September 15, the six-term lawmaker will officially step down from Congress.
Looking ahead, Maloy will now face Democratic candidate Kathleen Riebe in the general special election on November 21.
