Carville warns Trump could declare martial law to keep Democrats from winning in 2026
Democratic strategist James Carville on Wednesday refused to back down from claims that President Donald Trump will “try to call the election off, to do anything he can” to stop Democrats from sweeping the 2026 midterm elections.
“He’s going to see a massive defeat coming, and he’ll try to do anything he can to extricate himself in that defeat, and I would not put it at all past him to try to call martial law or declare that there’s some kind of national emergency in the country or anything like that, because the hoof prints are coming, you can hear them, and they’re going to get shellacking in November of 2026,” Carville said during an interview with NewsNation’s Chris Cuomo.
While Trump pieced together an unprecedented coalition to pull off a historic comeback for Republicans in the White House and both chambers of Congress last year, the majority party is historically at a disadvantage during midterm elections, giving impetus to Democrats’ hopes of sweeping the 2026 elections.
In recent weeks, Carville has warned that Trump would be willing to break the law to keep that from happening, claiming during another interview on Tuesday that Democrats have “every reason to be scared” that the president would try to rig the election in favor of Republicans and prevent historical party-in-power midterm election losses in the House.
“He’s going see retirements and people are going to start coming in and saying, ‘You know, we’re getting ready to lose, I got to change, I’ve got to get some distance.’ And he’s going to see all that coming. And I don’t put anything past him, nothing!” Carville told CNN’s Jim Acosta this week. “To try to call the election off, to do anything he can. He can think of things like that, that we can’t because we’re not accustomed to thinking like that.”
Despite hopeful projections for Democrats next year based on past midterm election results, the party has faced singular hurdles in moving past victories scored by Republicans during the 2024 elections.
Working-class voters moved allegiances to the GOP, while the minority and youth vote moved toward Republicans as well amid deep dissatisfaction with the policies offered by the Biden-era Democratic Party.
CARVILLE EYES ‘GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY’ FOR DEMOCRATS IN TRUMP MILITARY PARADE
In the months since, Democrats have struggled to unify around a leader or agenda as powerful establishment figures such as Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) grapple with whether to embrace or reject a new wave of millennial progressives such as Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and socialist New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani.
Proponents say the new generation of charismatic figures could breathe new life into the party. Critics say adopting socialist positions would bring widespread electoral losses and prove to be the death of the Democratic Party.
