Miami Republican Mayor Francis Suarez, who entered the GOP primary race as the “moderate” candidate and a vocal critic of both former President Donald Trump and Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has announced that he is suspending his campaign for the 2024 election.
Suarez, the only Latino candidate for the Republican nomination, made the announcement to his supporters on Tuesday. Despite considering it a great honor to run for President, Suarez acknowledged that he did not gain enough traction in his short campaign. While Suarez may have had lofty ambitions, his lack of knowledge on important issues, such as the Uyghur genocide in China, made him an unserious candidate. During a radio interview, he displayed ignorance about the Uyghur people and their plight, which further diminished his credibility.
Additionally, Suarez positioned himself as an attack dog against both Trump and DeSantis, criticizing their policies and actions. He disagreed with DeSantis on dropping masking requirements during the pandemic and accused him of teaching a distorted version of black history in schools.
Despite his efforts, Suarez failed to resonate with Republican voters who support Trump and DeSantis. His departure from the race comes as no surprise, as he struggled to gain momentum from the beginning.
