A Diplomatic Crisis Erupts Between Canada and India
The allegation that India may have been involved in the murder of a Sikh activist on Canadian soil has sparked a rising diplomatic crisis between the two nations. This has led to the expulsion of top diplomats from both Ottawa and New Delhi, further deteriorating their already strained relationship.
On Monday, a Canadian diplomat was expelled as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government investigated “credible allegations” of India’s involvement in the activist’s death.
India, however, dismissed these claims as “absurd.”
During a speech in the Canadian Parliament, Prime Minister Trudeau revealed that Canadian intelligence agencies were investigating the killing of Sikh leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar, who was allegedly gunned down on June 18th outside a Sikh cultural center in Surrey, British Columbia.
The World Sikh Organization of Canada described Nijjar as an ardent advocate of Khalistan, who actively protested against human rights violations in India. Approximately 770,000 Sikhs, around 2% of Canada’s population, reside in the country.
Trudeau informed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the killing during the Group of 20 conference in New Delhi. He emphasized that any complicity by the Indian government would be unacceptable and requested additional assistance in the investigation.
In response to the incident, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly announced the expulsion of a top Indian diplomat, stating, “If proven true, this would be a great violation of our sovereignty and of the most basic rule of how countries deal with each other.”
The Indian foreign ministry dismissed the claim of government involvement as ”absurd and motivated.” They accused Canada of sheltering Khalistani terrorists and extremists who pose a threat to India’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Canada’s national security adviser and the chief of the country’s spy service have traveled to India to confront Indian intelligence agencies with the allegations. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police is conducting an ongoing homicide investigation.
Trudeau also discussed the issue with United States President Joe Biden and United Kingdom Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, expressing deep concern over the allegations.
