Canada Makes History with Bronze Medal Finish at FIBA Basketball World Cup

MANILA (Reuters) – Canada achieved their first-ever podium finish at the FIBA Basketball World Cup, defeating an undermanned United States team 127-118 in an exhilarating overtime battle on Sunday in Manila.
NBA players Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Dillon Brooks took charge in overtime, combining for 11 crucial points for Canada.
Brooks, who will be joining the Houston Rockets next season, led the Canadian team with an impressive 39 points, along with four rebounds and five assists.
Gilgeous-Alexander, Canada’s top scorer, rebounder, and playmaker, finished with 31 points, six rebounds, and 12 assists.
Due to illness, Team USA had to sideline their NBA Rookie of the Year Paolo Banchero, Defensive Player of the Year Jaren Jackson Jr, and forward Brandon Ingram.
Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves, Team USA’s leading scorer, contributed 24 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Fan favorite Austin Reaves provided a spark off the bench with 23 points, while three other U.S. players scored in double-digits.
Canada made history in the tournament, reaching the semi-finals for the first time and securing a spot in the Summer Olympics for the first time since 2000.
Despite the loss, the United States improved upon their seventh-place finish in 2019, which was their worst-ever result in a major international tournament. The U.S. has won the tournament a record five times.
