California Superintendent warns School Board against informing parents about transgender students.
California Education Department Pressures School District to Withdraw Gender Notification Proposal
The head of California’s Department of Education, Tony Thurmond, has urged a school district to retract its proposal that requires notifying parents if their child identifies as another gender. Thurmond argues that such a policy would put LGBTQ+ students at risk, as many of them may face harm or abuse if their sexual orientation or gender identity is disclosed prematurely.
Thurmond also highlighted that the California Attorney General’s Office has initiated civil rights investigations into districts that have implemented similar policies. He advised the school board to protect itself from potential liability and scrutiny.
Despite the pressure, the school board approved the policy in a 3-2 vote, with board member Nicolas Pardue commending the measure for ensuring parents are informed.
This issue has gained attention in other blue states as well. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy defended the decision to keep changes in students’ sexual orientation and gender identity secret, stating that it is “the American way.” His administration has even filed lawsuits against school districts that adopt parental notification policies.
