California library ejects former college athlete following allegations of misgendering.
Athlete Kicked Out of Library for Speaking Out on Transgender Athletes in Women’s Sports
A former college athlete found herself at the center of controversy when she was asked to leave a library in California for discussing transgender athletes in women’s sports. Sophia Lorey, a passionate speaker and former athlete, was delivering a powerful speech on Sunday at a library in Davis, California. She highlighted the challenges young girls face in pursuing their dreams while men are allowed to compete in women’s sports.
During her speech, Lorey was interrupted by a librarian who objected to her statement. The librarian insisted that Lorey leave the premises due to her comments. Undeterred, Lorey continued to address the audience, referring to the issue as “biological men” competing against “biological girls,” as captured in footage shared on social media.

Lorey took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express her frustration. “The librarian then again told me to leave, so I directly asked why I was being asked to leave,” she wrote. “He responded, ‘Because you are misgendering, you were talking about men in women’s sports.'” The event, organized by a group that had reserved the conference room at the Mary L. Stephens Davis Branch Library, aimed to foster discussion on this important topic.
Fortunately, Lorey had legal support on her side. A licensed California attorney, Erin Friday, stepped up to defend Lorey’s right to speak at the event. Friday acknowledged the presence of protesters but emphasized that everyone has First Amendment rights, including Lorey.
Riley Gaines, a prominent advocate for protecting women’s sports, shared the footage of the incident on social media. Gaines described the situation as “ridiculous, but not shocking,” applauding Lorey for standing her ground.

Moms for Liberty, a conservative political group, organized the event at the library’s Yolo, California, chapter. The event, open to the public free of charge, aimed to shed light on the California Interscholastic Federation’s discriminatory policies that jeopardize girls’ opportunities to excel in sports. A flyer promoting the event called attention to the need for change.
