Republican Steve Garvey poised to defeat two prominent Democrats in California Senate primary
Former Baseball Star Steve Garvey Surges in California Senate Race
Republican candidate Steve Garvey, a former baseball star, has made a bold move in California’s 2024 Senate race by surpassing two high-profile House Democrats. California Democratic Reps. Katie Porter, Barbara Lee, and Adam Schiff are all vying for the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein’s seat, but Garvey has managed to secure the second place spot.
Garvey’s Rise in the Polls
In a recent Politico/Morning Consult poll, Garvey overtook Porter, who had been trailing Schiff for second place. While Schiff holds 28% of likely California primary voters, Garvey, the most prominent GOP candidate, gathered an impressive 19%. Porter mustered 17%, followed by Lee at 14%.
A Baseball Star Turned Politician
Garvey retired from Major League Baseball in 1987 after a successful 19-year career as an all-star infielder with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Diego Padres.
Garvey’s Campaign Strategy
Despite launching his campaign over two months ago, Garvey has been relatively low-key in the media. However, he recently embarked on a tour of Southern California to address key issues. During his tour, he visited the Salton Sea to learn more about the inland sea and stopped at a beef processing facility in Brawley to discuss the need for more middle-class jobs. He also toured a portion of the California-Mexico border with Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA).
Matt Shupe, a Republican consultant and spokesman for Garvey’s team, explained that the candidate has been focused on fundraising but plans to ramp up his campaigning efforts in 2024. Shupe emphasized the need to compete against well-funded career politicians and stated that Garvey will continue to take his message to voters all around California.
The Washington Examiner reached out to Garvey, Schiff, Porter, and Lee for comment.
