California Democrat criticizes Rep. Katie Porter as a “bully with a whiteboard” in scathing op-ed
Former Rep. Harley Rouda Slams Katie Porter in Scathing Op-Ed
In a fiery op-ed for The Orange County Register, former Rep. Harley Rouda (D-CA) did not hold back in his criticism of his former colleague, Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA), as she vies for the California Senate seat left vacant by the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).
Rouda, who served a single term in Congress from 2019-2021, expressed his surprise at being featured in Porter’s memoir, where he was portrayed as a punching bag. Porter often used him as an example to attack the “privilege” associated with family wealth.
In her memoir, Porter claimed that Rouda once mistook her for a valet at an event and accused him of using his congressional position to increase his wealth.
“Katie, while you were busy watching and judging my family and comparing yourself to me, I was hard at work passing legislation and bringing resources to Orange County,” Rouda wrote. He argued that serving in Congress actually cost his family money, contrary to Porter’s implications. Rouda also pointed out that Porter herself was not immune to the privilege she publicly criticized.
“Porter boasts about taking on powerful special interests, yet she accepted campaign contributions from Wall Street after promising not to. Talk about hypocrisy,” Rouda continued. He accused Porter of putting on an act with her whiteboard gimmick and staging classless photo ops on the House floor while portraying herself as a victim.
Directly addressing Porter, Rouda stated, “I never asked you to valet my car, I didn’t get rich from my time in Congress, and I didn’t buy a ‘DC penthouse for millions weeks after the election.’ These are all blatant lies, making you a liar.”
Rouda concluded his op-ed by referencing reports of abuse from Porter’s former staffers, labeling her as nothing more than a bully driven by power and ego.

In what ways does Rouda argue that Porter’s approach, particularly her confrontational tactics in congressional hearings, hinders her ability to effectively advocate for her constituents?
Nia Senate seat in the upcoming elections. Rouda, who served alongside Porter in the House of Representatives, alleges that Porter is more focused on self-promotion and pursuing a national profile than on serving the needs of her constituents.
Rouda starts by acknowledging Porter’s intelligence and ability to capture media attention, but quickly transitions into what he perceives as Porter’s flaws. He argues that Porter prioritizes her own personal agenda over the interests of her constituents by consistently advocating for policies that align with the progressive left. Rouda accuses Porter of using her platform to promote the ideas of the far-left wing of the Democratic Party instead of focusing on the moderate needs of the people she represents.
Furthermore, Rouda criticizes Porter for engaging in controversial tactics to garner attention and to reinforce her brand. He highlights her method of constantly berating witnesses in congressional hearings, which he believes detracts from the seriousness of the proceedings and undermines the pursuit of truth. Rouda claims that Porter’s confrontational approach may attract media attention, but it ultimately hinders her ability to effectively advocate for her constituents.
While acknowledging Porter’s commitment to addressing the high cost of prescription drugs and corporate abuses, Rouda argues that her hardline positions and confrontational style limit her ability to build coalitions and find common ground with Republicans. He asserts that Porter’s refusal to compromise and her adherence to ideological purity make it difficult for her to achieve tangible results on these important issues.
As Rouda concludes his op-ed, he calls on Californian voters to consider whether Porter’s style and priorities align with their own. He suggests that constituents deserve a representative who will prioritize their needs above personal ambition and political posturing. In doing so, Rouda hopes to steer voters away from selecting Porter as their future senator, urging them to choose a candidate who will work towards consensus and meaningful change.
The op-ed serves as a public criticism of a fellow Democrat, shedding light on the ideological fissures within the party. It also underscores the significance of style and approach in politics, demonstrating the potential consequences of prioritizing personal promotion over effective representation. Only time will tell how voters will respond to Rouda’s critique and what impact, if any, it will have on the upcoming elections.
