Los Angeles Cancels Fourth of July Fireworks Shows Due to Environmental Regulations

Excitement for Fourth of July fireworks shows along Los Angeles’ stunning coastline has been dampened by new environmental regulations. The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board recently implemented a countywide order, requiring all fireworks vendors to obtain permits for their public displays and promoting the use of biodegradable plastics. The aim is to combat ocean pollution caused by plastic debris resulting from these shows.

Permits and Cancellations

While most fireworks shows in the area will proceed as planned, a handful have unfortunately been canceled over the holiday weekend. This decision stems from one fireworks company’s refusal to comply with the new rules. Pyro Spectaculars by Souza, one of the nation’s largest and most experienced firework show producers, has chosen not to seek a permit from the regional water board due to concerns about the safety of their staff and the public.

“We cannot and will not risk the safety of our staff and the public to comply with the restrictive regulations,” stated CEO Jim Souza. The company believes that the water board implemented the regulations hastily and without sufficient input from industry experts.

Pyro Spectaculars expressed concerns that the new permit requirements would put their pyrotechnicians in harm’s way during and after the shows. The regulations would require real-time monitoring of the displays and immediate cleanup. Despite suggestions from local water board officials to use a video monitoring system as an alternative, the company remained steadfast in their decision.

Environmental Concerns

The issue of pollution was brought to light by the Coastal Environmental Rights Foundation, an environmental activist organization based in California. They filed a federal lawsuit earlier this year, alleging that a fireworks show over Long Beach’s bay violated the Clean Water Act by releasing plastic pollutants into the water.

Although the judge did not rule in favor of the plaintiffs, the case caught the attention of the regional water board in Los Angeles. As a result, the city implemented the new permit requirements in response to the lawsuit’s outcome.

While the cancellation of some fireworks shows may disappoint residents and visitors, it is a necessary step towards protecting the environment and ensuring the safety of those involved. The hope is that these new regulations will contribute to cleaner and healthier coastlines for future celebrations.
