Byron York says Democrats have ‘Trump opposite syndrome’
Byron York,chief political correspondent for the Washington Examiner,criticizes Democrats for what he terms “trump opposite syndrome,” meaning the party defines its positions and messaging largely in opposition to former President Donald Trump. Speaking on Fox News’s *The Ingraham Angle*, York points out that Democrats often take stances that directly contradict Trump’s policies, such as advocating for open borders in response to Trump’s calls for a wall, or opposing crime crackdowns where Trump supports them. He cites examples including Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s senate campaign launch, which highlights her opposition to Trump’s criticisms, and New York City comptroller Brad Lander’s congressional campaign, which focuses on immigration and resistance to Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) actions. York warns that such messaging, including support for sanctuary city policies and opposing ICE enforcement, sends a problematic message that could lead to negative consequences. York argues that Democrats continue to frame themselves primarily as the antithesis of Trump rather than on their own terms.

Washington Examiner chief political correspondent Byron York said that Democrats have “Trump opposite syndrome” when it comes to messaging to voters.
“Well, I think right now they are orienting themselves completely in relation to [President Donald] Trump,” York said on Fox News’s The Ingraham Angle. “They have Trump opposite syndrome.”
York’s comments came in response to Rep. Jasmine Crockett’s (D-TX) Senate campaign launch video, which shows Crockett listening to past criticism she has received from the president.
York argued that Democrats continue to brand themselves as the party against Trump.
“Trump says, ‘Build a wall,’ and they say, ‘Open the borders,’” York elaborated. “Trump says, ‘Well, let’s crack down on crime in D.C.,’ and they say, ‘Don’t touch our crime, we want our crime.’ And so now, when Trump says, ‘We have this huge scandal in Minnesota, and a preponderance majority of the defendants are from Somalia,’ [Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN)] comes out and says, ‘Let’s have more people from Somalia.’”
In addition to Crockett, New York City comptroller Brad Lander launched his congressional bid for Rep. Dan Goldman’s (D-NY) seat on Wednesday.
Lander focused his campaign launch video on immigration and the Trump administration’s mass deportation initiative.
In the video, Lander included a clip of him being arrested by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers for allegedly assaulting law enforcement and impeding a federal officer.
York said Lander and others are sending a message granting permission to “block” ICE officers.

“This is a particularly pernicious thing because you have the mayor talking about sanctuary city policies in New York, which is the local authorities are not obligated to assist ICE in what ICE is doing,” York said. “On the other hand, they cannot obstruct federal law enforcement.”
“This is a terrible message to be sent, and it’s gonna have bad results as ICE keeps enforcing the law,” York added.
