By His Own Logic, Schiff Is Inciting Violence Against The FBI

The article discusses California Senator Adam Schiff’s criticism of the FBI’s raid on former Trump National Security Advisor john Bolton’s home, which Schiff described as “clearly retribution.” The piece points out the apparent contradiction in Schiff’s stance by comparing it to his previous condemnation of former President donald Trump’s criticism of the FBI following the Mar-a-Lago raid. In 2022, Schiff accused Trump of inciting violence by calling the FBI corrupt for that search, emphasizing the dangers of violent rhetoric against federal agencies. The article argues that if Schiff considers Trump’s criticism as incitement, then by the same logic, Schiff’s immediate denunciation of the Bolton raid should also be seen as inciting political violence. This double standard raises questions about political speech and accountability when it comes to criticizing federal investigations.

California Sen. Adam Schiff declared on Sunday that the FBI’s raid on former Trump National Security Advisor John Bolton’s home was “clearly retribution.” But if criticizing FBI raids amounts to inciting violence, then Schiff is guilty of the very offense he once accused President Donald Trump of committing.

The FBI searched Bolton’s home on Friday in relation to Bolton’s alleged possession of classified documents.

On Sunday, Meet the Press’s Kristen Welker asked Schiff whether he believes that “people need to let this investigation play out and not get ahead of it at this point?”

Schiff immediately dismissed the possibility that the justice system should be permitted to play out, instead claiming this is a clear case of retribution.

“I think this is clearly retribution,” Schiff said. He went on to add, “What the president is trying to do here is very systemic and systematic, and that is, anyone who stands up to the president, anyone who criticizes the president, anyone who says anything adverse to the president’s interest gets the full weight of the federal government brought down on them.”

It’s a stark contrast to Schiff’s position in August 2022, when, during an interview on NPR regarding the raid on Mar-a-Lago, Schiff accused Trump of “stoking” violence against the FBI by “calling the FBI corrupt because they searched Mar-a-Lago.”

Schiff, when asked about “violent rhetoric” toward the FBI, then-Attorney General Merrick Garland, and “those who oppose Trump,” said political violence had become “acceptable to more and more of the American people” because of Trump.

“Part of what is responsible is we have the former president really stoking this, calling the FBI corrupt because they searched Mar-a-Lago when it appears they had every reason to do so and more,” Schiff said. The then-congressman added that the Biden Department of Justice was just following “the evidence where it leads.”

So which is it? If Trump’s criticisms of the FBI raid on his home were an unacceptable provocation, then Schiff’s immediate condemnation of the Bolton raid must also be an unacceptable provocation. Either both men are guilty of inciting political violence by undermining public confidence in the FBI, or political speech condemning federal agencies is actually not problematic.
