The Federal Bureau of Prisons will go on trial over guards’ sexual abuse of female inmates at a since-closed California prison.

FCI Dublin was one of six all-female prisons with the BOP and became infamous for widespread allegations of sexual abuse and coverups by staff against inmates. On Wednesday, in the first hearing since the prison closed last month, U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers ruled that a trial over a lawsuit brought forward by inmates would go ahead next year, the Associated Press reported.

Both sides were ordered to be ready for a trial on June 23, 2025.

In a statement after the hearing, the BOP said that “it appreciates Judge Gonzalez Rogers’ work in this area and stands ready to engage” with legal authorities.

Inmates sued the prison in August, alleging widespread sexual abuse and retaliation against prisoners who reported the abuse.

The scale of the abuse came to light in February 2022 after an investigation from the news agency discovered a culture of sexual abuse against female inmates. Prisoners who tried reporting the abuse were sent to solitary confinement, and officials responsible for investigating and preventing sexual assault were themselves accused of abusing inmates.

One of the most prolific abusers was former warden Ray J. Garcia, who was arrested in 2020 after complaints reached the Department of Justice, becoming the highest-ranking prison official to be arrested in a decade.
