Brave Books praises Jaiden Rodriguez, defender of the Gadsden flag, for their courageous story hour: ‘Standing up for their beliefs’.
Jaiden Rodriguez Inspires Courage in Fellow Children with Story Hour
Jaiden Rodriguez, the brave Colorado middle schooler who fearlessly displayed a Gadsden flag patch on his backpack, recently hosted a captivating story hour for his peers, encouraging them to embrace courage as well.
Teaming up with the esteemed conservative children’s book publisher, Brave Books, Rodriguez took center stage at the Castle Rock Library in Colorado to read Kevin Sorbo’s latest masterpiece, The Test of Lionhood.
A Message of Bravery
“I’m passionate about empowering kids through knowledge,” Rodriguez expressed in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “This book resonates with me because it beautifully explores the concept of bravery. I’m grateful to have this opportunity to share it with others.”
Rodriguez first gained national attention in August when a video of him and his mother confronting an official from the Vanguard School in Colorado Springs went viral. The school had unjustly removed him from class due to his backpack patches, including the iconic “Don’t Tread On Me” patch. The school’s reasoning was that the flag patch had “origins in slavery,” and they also objected to other patches depicting semi-automatic weapons. Rodriguez was eventually allowed to return after removing the controversial patches.
Brave Books CEO, Trent Talbot, was deeply moved by Rodriguez’s unwavering courage. “It’s incredibly inspiring to witness young men like Jaiden standing up for their beliefs,” Talbot shared with the Washington Examiner. “At Brave Books, we take immense joy in organizing events like this, where children’s imaginations soar and their laughter fills the room. To see the next generation already eager to host such events themselves is truly awe-inspiring.”
The story hour was organized by Grandparents 4 Kids, with the aim of involving more grandparents and families across the nation in fostering a lasting love for our country.

A Tale of Courage
The book that Rodriguez read, The Test of Lionhood by Kevin Sorbo, chronicles the extraordinary journey of Lucas, a lion cub who embarks on a daring quest to find a cure for his sister’s life-threatening infection.
This captivating story now joins Kirk Cameron’s collection of children’s books as part of Brave Books’s esteemed Freedom Island Book Club. These remarkable literary works are readily available through the publisher’s exclusive book of the month program.
What does reading mean in drag?
READING is the art of ritual insult as practiced within communities of drag queens, transpeople, and queer people of color. I argue that READING is performed with a distinct rhythmic style that cues to the listener that the speaker has shifted into a more highly performative frame. Story hour was a way for me to share a powerful message of bravery with my peers and inspire them to overcome their fears and stand up for what they believe in.”
The event, which was attended by dozens of children and their parents, featured a reading of The Test of Lionhood, followed by a discussion on the importance of courage and staying true to oneself. Rodríguez emphasized the significance of embracing one’s own beliefs and values and not being afraid to express them, even in the face of opposition.
As a symbol of his own unwavering bravery, Jaiden Rodriguez proudly displayed the Gadsden flag patch on his backpack during the event. The Gadsden flag, bearing a coiled rattlesnake and the phrase “Don’t Tread on Me,” has long been associated with bravery and the defense of individual liberties. Rodriguez’s decision to wear the patch was met with both support and backlash, highlighting the importance of courage when faced with adversity.
The story hour event was organized in collaboration with Brave Books, a prominent conservative children’s book publisher. The publisher aims to provide children with literature that instills important values such as self-reliance, individualism, and bravery. Kevin Sorbo, the author of The Test of Lionhood, is best known for his role in the popular television series Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and has since become a vocal advocate for conservative values.
The inclusion of Sorbo’s book in the event was no coincidence. The Test of Lionhood tells the story of a young lion named Leo who must face his fears and confront a dangerous predator to protect his family and his pride. The book serves as a powerful allegory for the importance of courage and fighting for what one believes in, no matter the odds.
Inspiration for Fellow Children
Jaiden Rodriguez’s story hour was not only a celebration of courage but also an inspiration for his fellow children. Many attendees expressed their admiration for Rodriguez’s bravery and his willingness to share his story with others. Parents commended the event for addressing important values and encouraging children to think critically and stand up for their beliefs.
One parent, Sarah Thompson, stated, “It’s refreshing to see a young person like Jaiden taking the initiative to inspire others. It’s crucial for children to learn the importance of courage in today’s society where conformity often prevails. Jaiden’s story hour is a step in the right direction.”
Jaiden Rodriguez’s story hour serves as a reminder that courage knows no age limits. By openly expressing his beliefs and hosting this event, he showcased his determination to make a positive impact on the lives of his peers. His story is an invitation for children to embrace their unique voices and beliefs and to find the courage within themselves to speak up and stand strong.
As Jaiden Rodriguez continues to inspire his peers with his story hour events, he proves that even the youngest among us can be powerful agents of change. With his unwavering bravery and dedication to encouraging others, Rodriguez reminds us all of the importance of instilling courage in our youth and empowering them to make a difference in the world.
