Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser left the district as law enforcement activity surged following the federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department and mobilization of the National Guard.
Bowser traveled to Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, according to several reports, though the mayor’s office did not confirm her whereabouts to the Washington Examiner.
“The mayor has a family commitment and had to pick up her daughter. She will return to the district tomorrow,” the mayor’s office said in a statement to the Washington Examiner on Thursday.
Bowser’s departure followed President Donald Trump’s declaration of a “crime emergency” in Washington, D.C., and his deployment of increased federal law enforcement officers throughout the district.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said in an interview with Fox & Friends on Thursday morning that 19 law enforcement agencies had made 45 criminal arrests on assault charges, removed 29 undocumented immigrants from the district’s streets, and seized three illegal firearms since being mobilized by the Trump administration on Wednesday evening.
“These results are happening night after night because of the efforts of this federal task force that are working alongside the Metropolitan Police Department, who agree with this effort,” Leavitt said.

Bowser, who was calm in her initial response to Trump federalizing the MPD on Monday, has changed her tone throughout the week.
“We all need to do what we can in our space, in our lane to protect our city and to protect our autonomy, to protect our home rule, and get to the other side of this guy, and make sure we elect a Democratic House so that we have a backstop to this authoritarian push,” Bowser said in a virtual town hall Tuesday evening.
