Gunfire Erupts Near Boston’s Annual Caribbean Festival
At least seven people were wounded by gunfire near the parade of Boston’s annual Caribbean festival on Saturday, creating a chaotic scene. However, police clarified that the incident was not related to the event itself.
According to Police Commissioner Michael Cox, two suspects have been apprehended and multiple weapons have been seized in Dorchester. Fortunately, the victims’ injuries are not life-threatening, and they have been transported to local hospitals for treatment.
The shootings occurred on the outskirts of the J’ouvert Parade, prompting officers to halt the parade temporarily. This decision was made to secure the large crime scene and gather crucial evidence.
Police Commissioner Cox emphasized, “This morning’s shooting is not related to the parade that occurred.”
Authorities suspect that the gunfire erupted during a confrontation between two groups shortly before 7:45 a.m. They are urging the public to come forward with any tips or video footage that could assist in the investigation.
Thanks to the swift response of the officers, they were able to not only confront the gunfire but also provide immediate medical aid to the victims by applying tourniquets. Additionally, two suspects involved in the incident were apprehended.
Despite the unfortunate incident, the remainder of the 50th annual Caribbean carnival events will proceed as planned, according to Mr. Cox and other officials.
Expressing her disappointment, Shirley Shillingford, president of the Caribbean American Carnival Association of Boston, stated, “We have no interest in having anything but peace among the universe, and so it was very, very difficult for me this morning to know that something occurred.”
Mayor Michelle Wu expressed her gratitude to the city’s first responders, particularly the police, for their strong presence in the neighborhood.
