Bondi says troops will go to ‘a city who wants us there,’ not Chicago
The article discusses comments from Attorney General Pam Bondi regarding the potential deployment of federal troops too assist with crime control in U.S. cities. Bondi indicated that Chicago is unlikely to be the next city to receive federal assistance following Washington, D.C., primarily because local leaders, including Governor JB Pritzker adn Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, have opposed cooperation with armed federal forces. Due to this resistance, the federal administration plans to focus on a city more welcoming to their presence. President Donald Trump hinted that the announcement of the next city would be made soon, mentioning ongoing discussions with the respective state governor and city mayor. New orleans has been suggested as a possible alternative location, with Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry reportedly inviting troops. Simultaneously occurring, federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) continues targeting illegal immigrants in Chicago through operations like the “Operation Midway Blitz.” Bondi has actively challenged Chicago and Illinois for their sanctuary city policies, including legal action against the jurisdictions and demands for compliance with federal immigration laws, which local officials have consistently rejected.
Bondi says federal troops will go to ‘a city who wants us there’ rather than Chicago
Attorney General Pam Bondi indicated that Chicago may not be the next city after Washington, D.C., to undergo a federal takeover.
In recent weeks, Gov. JB Pritzker (D-IL) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson have denounced the idea of cooperating with armed troops and federal agents entering the city to crack down on crime. Bondi said their resistance is likely why the administration will prioritize a more receptive city.
“They are a progressive city, and they don’t want the president’s help. That’s on them,” she said of Chicago on Fox News Tuesday night. “Chicago should be begging Donald Trump for help to keep Chicago safe — yet they aren’t. So we’re going to a city who wants us there.”
President Donald Trump teased that the announcement would be coming soon, possibly on Wednesday.
“We’re going to be announcing another city that we’re going to very shortly. We’re working it out with the governor of a certain state that would love us to be there and the mayor of a certain city in the same state,” he said on Tuesday. “We’ll announce it probably tomorrow.”
Last week, Trump floated New Orleans instead of Chicago as the next city to see the National Guard. New Orleans is a predominantly blue city in an otherwise red state. Trump has said Gov. Jeff Landry (R-LA) has invited a possible deployment.
Although Chicago is probably not the next city to see federal policing, Immigration and Customs Enforcement is targeting illegal immigrants in Chicago and Illinois as part of Operation Midway Blitz. Since the Department of Homeland Security announced the operation on Monday, ICE agents have made multiple arrests in Chicago.
DHS launched the operation in honor of Katie Abraham, a 20-year-old woman who was killed in a hit-and-run car crash earlier this year, allegedly by a Guatemalan national illegally living in the United States. He was arrested shortly thereafter.
TRUMP INTENSIFIES WAR WITH PRITZKER AS CHICAGO AWAITS IMMINENT DECISION ON FEDERAL TAKEOVER
In February, Bondi sued Chicago, Illinois, and Cook County over their sanctuary laws protecting illegal immigrants in the Department of Justice’s first legal action taken against sanctuary jurisdictions. The lawsuit was dismissed in July, but the DOJ is intent on keeping the state’s leaders accountable.
Bondi sent letters to many sanctuary cities and states, including Chicago and Illinois, demanding they comply with federal immigration laws. Pritzker and Johnson have repeatedly refused.
