Blackburn accuses Schumer of seeking a government shutdown to retain control of the US Senate.
Sen. Marsha Blackburn Accuses Sen. Chuck Schumer of Plotting Government Shutdown to Maintain Senate Majority
According to Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) is allegedly orchestrating a government shutdown in an effort to secure his position as Senate majority leader. With the upcoming Congressional election on the horizon, the Republican Party aims to gain control of the Senate and retain its majority in the House of Representatives. Blackburn asserts that Schumer is the driving force behind the push for a government shutdown, as it would aid his bid to remain in power until 2025, a feat Blackburn deems ”very difficult” to achieve.
Addressing Inflation and Taking Power from the White House
Blackburn emphasizes that Senate and House Republicans are actively working to pass spending bills to curb inflation and diminish the influence of the White House. She highlights the impact of inflation on everyday Americans, citing rising gas prices and the increasing cost of groceries. The Tennessee senator believes that tackling inflation is a crucial step in wresting power away from the White House, and she advocates for passing bills to address this issue before resorting to a government shutdown.
Schumer’s Plea to Avoid a Harmful Government Shutdown
In a recent ”Dear Colleague” letter, Schumer commended Appropriations Chairwoman Patty Murray (D-WA) and Vice Chairwoman Susan Collins (R-ME) for successfully passing 12 bills to fund the government before the Senate recessed in July. The New York senator urged the Republican-controlled House to follow suit and pass their appropriations bills to prevent a detrimental and unnecessary government shutdown. Schumer expressed his concern over the potential brinkmanship and hostage-taking that occurred earlier in the year, when House Republicans pushed the country to the brink of default to appease the extreme members of their party.
Government Shutdown and its Implications for Impeachment Proceedings
The looming government shutdown poses a potential obstacle for House Republicans in their pursuit of impeaching President Joe Biden, a demand echoed by several Republican lawmakers, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has affirmed his commitment to not bypass a floor vote to initiate an impeachment inquiry into Biden, which would require 218 votes to transfer the impeachment trial to the Senate.
