Google has announced its decision to remove references to notable cultural observances such as black History Month, Women’s History Month, Pride Month, and Indigenous Peoples Month from its Calendar feature, starting in early 2024.This change follows feedback indicating that the manual addition of various cultural moments was not enduring.The company’s spokesperson explained that they aimed for a more scalable approach to calendar events. This advancement comes shortly after a controversial renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to “Gulf of America” for U.S. users, in line with an executive order from president Trump. Additionally,Google’s recent policy shifts include the elimination of vaccine and mask mandates and a departure from diversity,equity,and inclusion hiring practices.
Black History Month among other events removed by Google Calendar
Google has opted out of references to Black History Month in a recent move away from cultural holidays and observances.
Feb. 1 is considered the start of Black History Month but will no longer be displayed on Google Calendar along with Women’s History Month beginning March 1, Pride Month beginning June 1, and Indigenous Peoples Month beginning Nov. 1. This phasing out began in the middle of 2024.
“Some years ago, the Calendar team started manually adding a broader set of cultural moments in a wide number of countries around the world,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement. “We got feedback that some other events and countries were missing — and maintaining hundreds of moments manually and consistently globally wasn’t scalable or sustainable.”
This comes weeks after Google changed the Gulf of Mexico on its Maps app to the “Gulf of America” for its users in the United States in accordance with President Donald Trump’s executive order that gave the gulf the new name.
In recent years, Google has made several changes in its company culture. It dissolved its vaccination, masking, and social distancing policies earlier than most at the start of 2022. More recently, it no longer adheres to diversity, equity, and inclusion hiring practices.
