Billie Eilish Wants Government To Protect Her Home But Not Yours
The biggest winner of Billie Eilish’s award-winning weekend at the Grammys might be her stalker. While accepting the Grammy Award for Song of the Year, Eilish said: “As grateful as I feel, I honestly don’t feel like I need to say anything, but, that no one is illegal on stolen land.”
“It’s just really hard to know what to say and what to do right now,” she continued. “And I just I feel really hopeful in this room, and I feel like we just need to keep fighting and speaking up and protesting, and our voices really do matter, and the people matter.”
“F-ck ICE,” she added.
Her statement left little room for the belief in borders, enforcement, or the idea that some people are not allowed to cross certain boundaries. Which is awkward considering Eilish has spent years begging the government to protect her own personal property, enforce its border, and make clear that she believes some people are actually not allowed to cross certain boundaries.
Eilish obtained a restraining order in 2023 against 53-year-old Shawn Christopher McIntyre, who, according to the Los Angeles Times, had “been sending hundreds of messages via social media to her and her family since September.” The messages reportedly contained violent threats and disturbing messages.
Eilish reportedly “suffered substantial anxiety, fear and emotional distress over her personal safety and the safety of her family and friends.”
In one instance, according to the report, Eilish observed the stalker “sitting down in front of the gate of my residence.” (The gate, also known as a physical structure meant to keep people out, is … almost like a … border.)
When an uninvited person crossed the boundary of Eilish’s property, Eilish didn’t reflect on historical land disputes. She didn’t suggest that property lines are a tool to steal land from others. She didn’t argue that no one is illegal. She went to court, and she asked the government to step in and protect her, to decide that someone’s presence within 100 yards of her home was unacceptable and illegal.
The government did exactly that, which isn’t unusual. But the debacle exposes Eilish’s hypocrisy. When her safety is on the line, borders aren’t just “illegal” ideas; they’re essential. Enforcement of those borders isn’t met with “f-ck” said enforcement; it’s welcomed. When it’s Eilish’s home and gate and the surrounding area, she’s suddenly very comfortable with physical boundaries and extremely enthusiastic about enforcing them.
But Eilish’s own words at the Grammys ruin the logic that justified her restraining order. If no one is illegal on stolen land, then the man at her gate wasn’t trespassing. He was simply existing in a space that apparently no one has the authority to restrict.
Of course Eilish doesn’t actually believe that though. Her gate proves it.
