Barr clarifies no special counsel for Hunter Biden inquiry.
Former U.S. Attorney General William Barr on Why He Didn’t Appoint a Special Counsel for Hunter Biden Investigation
In a recent interview with CBS News, Barr revealed his reasoning behind not appointing a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, despite the allegations surrounding him. According to Barr, doing so would have given the Biden administration an opportunity to cancel the probe once Biden took office as president.
During the interview with Major Garrett on “Face The Nation,” Barr explained, “To appoint a special counsel, there needs to be a conflict of interest. I had no conflict of interest in investigating Hunter Biden. If there was a conflict, it would have been Attorney General Merrick Garland’s decision to make when he took office.”
Barr further elaborated, “I believed that preempting Garland’s decision would have led to the investigation being canceled. I wanted to ensure that our U.S. Attorney remained in place. Once Garland assumed his role, it was his responsibility to determine if a thorough and fair investigation was being conducted.”
Support for a Special Counsel
Despite his decision, Barr expressed agreement with House Republicans who believed that a special counsel should have been appointed under Attorney General Merrick Garland. However, he acknowledged that time constraints due to the statute of limitations might prevent it from happening now.
Barr also condemned Hunter Biden’s actions, describing his “cashing in on the office” as “grotesque.” He emphasized the importance of investigating whether any crimes were committed.
