Biden’s demographic victories outshine Trump’s, offering a glimmer of good news for the president: Poll

President Joe Biden’s 2024 reelection campaign ‍is experiencing optimism following a new poll that shows⁢ him narrowly⁣ leading former President Donald ⁤Trump, 50% to 48%, in a direct matchup. The Fox News poll highlights a significant shift among older voters—a demographic ‍that largely‍ supported Trump in the 2020⁤ election.⁣ Previously, voters aged 65 and older favored Trump by a small margin, but the latest survey indicates a move towards Biden, with a 57% to 42%⁣ split. This change‍ could be attributed ‌to the Biden campaign’s targeted efforts to address and appeal to older⁢ voters’ concerns, particularly regarding Biden’s age and mental sharpness. The shift in ⁢support from this ⁤key group suggests a positive ‍trend for Biden in contrast ⁢to his performance in most other recent polls which showed him trailing Trump.

President Joe Biden‘s campaign is seeing a glimmer of hope, with a new poll showing him leading former President Donald Trump overall — and with one of the former president’s key demographics.

A Fox News poll released Wednesday evening shows Biden leading Trump overall, 50%-48%, in a head-to-head matchup and shows the president leading with older voters, 57%-42%. Voters aged 65 and older went for Trump 51%-48% in the 2020 election, according to AP Votecast, but those voters look to be shifting away from the former president.

The Biden campaign has courted older voters as the president faces concerns over his age and mental acuity and has been able to peel off support from them, according to other polls, alongside Wednesday’s Fox News survey.

The poll is a step in the right direction for Biden, who has trailed Trump in most recent national and battleground state surveys, but the lead in the Fox News poll still falls within the margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points and is still behind the 4.5-point margin Biden won by nationally in 2020. Another warning sign for the president is his polling with key minority groups.

The Fox News survey shows Biden leading Trump with Hispanic voters 53%-43%, while in 2020, Biden won the group 63%-35%, and the poll shows Biden leading with black voters 73%-27%, compared to a 91%-8% win in 2020. Biden’s slipping grip on these key groups has also been documented in other recent polls.

The survey shows that while Biden and Trump have a firm hold on voters from their respective parties, Biden holds a 52%-43% edge over Trump with independent voters. In 2020, Biden won independent voters 52%-38%.

The election is just over four months away, and Biden and Trump are slated to face off in their first debate next Thursday on CNN. Their second debate will be in September, just before early voting begins in several key states.

Trump and Biden are scheduled to accept their respective parties’ nominations in the coming months. The Republican National Convention is scheduled for July 15-18 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, while the Democratic National Convention is scheduled for August 19-22 in Chicago, Illinois.

The Republican National Convention is scheduled to begin days after Trump is sentenced in his hush money case, which voters polled in the Fox News survey overwhelmingly, 94%, said did not cause them to reconsider whom they support.
