Phillips saw this as an opportunity to secure an easy win in the state. Clyburn viewed this move as highly opportunistic and detrimental to the Democratic Party.
“I think Dean Phillips has a huge opportunity here to just crack the Democrat Party wide open,” Gov. Chris Sununu (R-NH) said last week.
Meanwhile, Phillips has been actively strengthening his campaign team. He has enlisted the help of Jeff Weaver, a prominent figure in Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) previous presidential campaigns, and Zach Graumann, who managed tech entrepreneur Andrew Yang’s 2020 presidential campaign, according to the Washington Post.
However, Steve Schmidt, a top adviser for John McCain’s 2008 presidential run, is planning to leave Phillips’s campaign. He intends to form a super PAC that will raise funds for the Minnesota Democrat.
