Biden’s $10 million book deal advance ranks lower than recent Democratic presidents – Washington Examiner

Former President Joe Biden has secured a $10 million advance for his upcoming presidential memoir from the Hachette Book Group. This deal, arranged by Creative Artists Agency, gives Hachette the worldwide rights to the book. Biden’s previous memoir, *Promise Me, Dad*, was released in 2017 and focused on his late son Beau Biden’s battle with brain cancer. Compared to recent Democratic presidents,Biden’s book deal is notably smaller; Barack and Michelle Obama earned around $60 million for their memoirs from Penguin Random House, while Bill Clinton received a $15 million advance from Alfred A. Knopf. Other former presidents’ book deals have varied, with George W. Bush securing $7 million and Donald Trump choosing not to write a memoir after leaving office. Biden’s extensive political career spans over 40 years, including his time as senator, vice president, and president. Despite announcing an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer earlier in the year, Biden has expressed determination to complete his memoir.

Former President Joe Biden sold his presidential memoir to the Hachette Book Group for around $10 million, according to a Wednesday report.

Biden was previously represented by Creative Artists Agency, which sold Hachette worldwide rights for the book. The agency had represented Biden for his memoir Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose in 2017. That book focused on Biden’s relationship with his son Beau Biden, who died in 2015 from brain cancer.

Biden’s new deal, reported by the Wall Street Journal, ranks lower than those of recent former Democratic presidents. Former President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama struck a deal with Penguin Random House in the range of $60 million. Alfred A. Knopf paid $15 million for a book deal with former President Bill Clinton.

President Donald Trump did not pursue a memoir after leaving the White House in 2021. Former President George W. Bush landed a $7 million deal with Crown Publishing Group.

Biden’s political career encompassed 36 years in the Senate representing Delaware, eight years as vice president, and four years as the president.

Biden announced earlier this year that he had been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of prostate cancer, which could complicate the timeline for writing the memoir.

Earlier this month, Biden said he was “working like hell” to write a memoir about his presidency.
