Biden to engage with Arab and Muslim communities on Gaza, as predicted by Debbie Dingell
Rep. Debbie Dingell Believes President Biden Will Meet with Arab and Muslim Community Leaders in Michigan
Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) is confident that President Joe Biden will engage with Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan to discuss his approach to the Israel-Hamas war. This comes after a protest vote against Biden in the state’s primary last week, which highlighted the differences between Biden and former President Donald Trump.
“I know that the president will meet with this community,” Dingell stated in an interview with NBC. “I think they’re very raw right now. And I think let’s get some pieces in place. But you know, I’m going to tell you something else. I don’t hear Donald Trump talk about this at all. And I’m not exactly sure how he would be handling it. I have some pretty strong feelings about what would be happening there. Joe Biden is talking about it. Joe Biden is working hard to get that ceasefire.”
Reaching Out to the Arab American Muslim Community
Dingell was asked about the reported strategy of reducing opportunities for pro-Palestinian demonstrators to protest the president. She responded by saying, “I have had very direct conversations with the president, and I believe those conversations are private. But I think you’ve seen a change, that the White House has been reaching out more to the Arab American Muslim community, hearing their hurt. I am told that they are doing many things very directly.”
In 2016, Dingell warned Hillary Clinton about Trump’s popularity in Michigan before he won the state. Biden won it four years later, but with a narrow margin. In the recent primary, 101,000 Democrats marked themselves as “uncommitted” to protest the president’s handling of the war.
“Michigan is a purple state,” Dingell emphasized. “We are a state that frequently votes uncommitted. It is one issue that needs to be paid attention to.”
Dearborn, Michigan Mayor Abdullah Hammoud, representing a city with a majority Middle Eastern or North African American population, criticized Dingell’s argument. He pointed out that if 100,000 people voted for “uncommitted” in the 2012 MI Dem presidential primary, “uncommitted” would have won with 51% of the vote, surpassing Barack Obama.
“If you wish to take that calculated risk of discounting the results, you risk unraveling the entirety of our American democracy,” Hammoud wrote on social media.
To the pundits,
If 100,000 people voted for “uncommitted” in the 2012 MI Dem presidential primary, “uncommitted” would have won the primary election with 51% of the vote – beating Barack Obama.

What concerns do Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan have regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict?
As happening in Gaza right now. I know that President Biden shares our concerns and is committed to finding a solution that brings peace and justice to the region.”
Michigan is home to a significant Arab and Muslim population, with communities that have long been engaged in political activism, advocacy, and philanthropy. In recent years, these communities have played a crucial role in shaping national conversations on issues such as immigration, civil rights, and foreign policy.
The recent Israel-Hamas conflict has highlighted the urgency of addressing the plight of Palestinians and the need for a sustainable, just, and peaceful resolution. Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan have been vocal in their demands for the United States to play a more active role in resolving the conflict and ensuring the protection of Palestinian lives.
President Biden’s approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict has drawn both praise and criticism. While his administration has expressed support for Israel’s right to defend itself, there have also been calls for a more balanced approach that acknowledges the suffering of the Palestinian people. Many in the Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan have been keen to hear directly from President Biden about his vision for addressing the root causes of the conflict and working towards a lasting peace.
Rep. Debbie Dingell’s confidence in President Biden’s engagement with the Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan reflects her trust in his commitment to inclusivity and dialogue. By meeting with these leaders, President Biden not only has the opportunity to hear their perspectives and concerns firsthand but also to demonstrate his dedication to fostering a more inclusive and empathetic approach to foreign policy.
Michigan’s primary last week saw some voters express their dissatisfaction with President Biden’s handling of the Israel-Hamas conflict. However, it is essential to note that this protest vote does not represent the entirety of the Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan, who recognize the complexity of the situation and understand the challenges faced by any administration in addressing such conflicts.
As the Biden administration continues to navigate the complexities of the Israel-Hamas conflict, engaging with Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan can provide valuable insights and strengthen relationships. It is through dialogue and understanding that progress can be made in finding a peaceful resolution and ensuring the protection of all lives affected by the conflict.
President Biden’s meeting with Arab and Muslim community leaders in Michigan will serve as an opportunity to address concerns, build trust, and work towards a more comprehensive and just approach to the Israel-Hamas conflict. It is a step towards fostering a greater sense of inclusivity, empathy, and understanding in our foreign policy decisions.
As Rep. Debbie Dingell has expressed her confidence in President Biden’s intention to engage with the Arab and Muslim communities in Michigan, it is hopeful that this meeting will indeed take place. By actively involving these communities in shaping policy conversations and decisions, President Biden can demonstrate his commitment to a more inclusive and equitable America, both at home and abroad.
