Biden invites foreign leaders and press to Camp David after almost a decade.
CAMP DAVID, Maryland — President Biden Hosts Trilateral Summit with Japanese and South Korean Leaders
President Joe Biden welcomed Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol to Camp David for a trilateral summit, addressing the growing threat posed by China and North Korea to Indo-Pacific nations.
Building Strong Alliances in the Indo-Pacific
Biden has made it a priority to strengthen alliances in the Indo-Pacific region. However, historical tensions between Japan and South Korea have hindered diplomatic efforts to counter China and North Korea.
“China’s entire strategy is based on the premise that America’s No. 1 and No. 2 ally in the region can’t get together and get on the same page,” U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel noted.
During the press conference, President Biden expressed his unwavering commitment to both countries and praised their political courage in addressing longstanding tensions.
Advancing Cooperation on Security and Economic Issues
The leaders discussed efforts to share information on North Korean missile launches and emphasized the importance of routine conversations to enhance their cooperative capacity. They also announced the launch of a supply chain monitoring pilot to address future challenges based on lessons learned from the pandemic.
Biden further announced a trilateral healthcare collaboration, inspired by the U.S. Cancer Moonshot initiative, with the goal of ending cancer in our lifetimes.
A Historic Summit at Camp David
President Biden expressed his appreciation for the leaders’ visit to Camp David, marking the first time international leaders had visited the site in nearly a decade. The event showcased the significance of the trilateral relationship and the commitment to cooperation.
While the summit deepened economic and security ties, it did not establish a formal security agreement similar to Article 5 of NATO. The focus was on enhancing regional stability and security in the Indo-Pacific.
Overall, the trilateral summit at Camp David demonstrated the united efforts of the United States, Japan, and South Korea to address common challenges and promote prosperity in the region.
