Biden cancels Space Command relocation from Colorado to Alabama.
President Joe Biden Keeps U.S. Space Command Headquarters in Colorado
In a decision that prioritizes national security, President Joe Biden has reversed a Trump-era plan to relocate the U.S. Space Command headquarters from Colorado to Alabama. The move comes after careful consideration of operational readiness and input from leaders at the Department of Defense (DoD), according to National Security Adviser John Kirby.

The U.S. Space Command, separate from the Space Force, is currently headquartered in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Its mission is to provide space capabilities to U.S. forces by leveraging joint forces from various military branches.
Former President Donald Trump revived the program during his administration, and it was announced in January 2021 that the Air Force had chosen to move the Space Command headquarters to Alabama. However, Biden’s decision to keep it in Colorado has been met with approval from Colorado politicians who have opposed the relocation effort.
“This is great news for Colorado and our national security — keeping U.S. Space Command in Colorado Springs is an exciting outcome for our state, military families, jobs, and businesses,” said Colorado Governor Jared Polis.
Representative Ken Buck also expressed his support, stating, “I applaud the decision today by the Biden Administration to keep U.S. Space Command where it belongs — Colorado. Our entire Congressional Delegation, both Republicans and Democrats, have worked together for years to achieve this important result.”
However, officials from Alabama have expressed outrage and plan to push back against the Biden administration’s decision. Alabama Governor Kay Ivey called it the “wrong decision for national security.”
Members of Congress, such as Armed Services Committee Chairman Mike Rogers and Senator Tommy Tuberville, have also voiced their opposition and pledged to fight against the planned move. Kirby emphasized that relocating Space Command could have a negative effect on its readiness, especially at a time when China is rapidly developing its space capabilities.
