Biden loses voters to third-party campaigns, but swing states may rescue him.

Democrats Concerned About Third-Party Candidates in 2024 White House Race

Democrats are expressing worries about the potential impact of a third-party candidate entering the 2024 White House race. They fear that such a candidate could siphon votes away from President Joe Biden, potentially leading to the return of former President Donald Trump to the executive mansion.

While swing states are always a key focus for presidential hopefuls, a recent analysis of voting trends in battleground states has revealed another reason why Biden is relying on them in this election cycle. According to Politico, voters in swing states have shown a lower likelihood of voting for a third-party candidate compared to voters in other states. This makes swing state voters a prime target for the Biden campaign in 2024, as third-party candidates have historically underperformed in these states.

Swing States Remain Crucial

Among the top 20 states where third-party candidates have performed well in the past two presidential elections, none are considered swing states. In 2020, states like Minnesota, Maine, and Iowa had winning margins in the single digits. Biden is currently polling ahead of Trump in several crucial swing states, including Wisconsin where a recent Marquette Law School poll showed the president leading by nine points.

Despite Biden’s strong polling numbers, the potential threat of a third-party candidate still looms. According to an NBC News poll, more Democrats than Republicans would consider voting for a third-party presidential candidate. This has raised concerns among Democrats, especially with talks of Senator Joe Manchin (D-W) potentially making a third-party bid in 2024.

No Labels and the Concerns of Democrats

The bipartisan group No Labels has added to these concerns by inviting Senator Manchin to headline an event in New Hampshire. Democrats worry that this could pose a threat to Biden’s reelection prospects. However, No Labels has made it clear that they will only pursue an alternative option if both major-party candidates are unpopular.

The group claims to be responding to voter concerns about another Biden vs. Trump matchup and denies any intention of facilitating Trump’s return to the White House. In fact, they have accused partisan operatives of trying to undermine their efforts to provide an alternative option for the 2024 presidential race.

Cornel West, a Green Party candidate who recently announced his bid for the White House, has also sounded the alarm for Democrats regarding the potential impact of third-party candidates in 2024.

DNC Chairman Jaime Harrison emphasized the importance of not experimenting or playing around with third-party candidates during a conversation with former White House press secretary Jen Psaki.

An analysis conducted by Third Way, spanning 27 elections from 1912 to 2020, revealed that third-party candidates have never garnered enough electoral votes to win a single election.
