Biden aims to strengthen Israel amidst Democratic divisions.
President Biden Reaffirms Support for Israel Amidst Intensifying Conflict
President Joe Biden made a whirlwind trip to Israel, where he reiterated his unwavering support for the embattled nation. In a prime-time speech on Thursday night, he plans to emphasize this support once again. While some on the Left are advocating for a ceasefire or even openly supporting Hamas, Biden remains steadfast in his backing of Israel and intends to seek approval from Congress for aid.
Biden Shifts Focus to Israel as Conflict Escalates
“For decades, we’ve ensured Israel’s qualitative military edge,” Biden stated. “And later this week, I’m going to ask the United States Congress for an unprecedented support package for Israel’s defense.”
Despite spending only seven hours in Israel, less time than the flight itself, Biden felt it was crucial to make his message clear. “I come to Israel with a single message: You are not alone,” he declared in Tel Aviv. “As long as the United States stands — and we will stand forever — we will not let you ever be alone.”
The original itinerary included meetings with leaders from Jordan, Egypt, and Palestine, in addition to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. However, these meetings were postponed due to false reports of an Israeli rocket hitting a Gaza hospital.
Some members of Biden’s own Democratic Party, including the progressive House group known as the “Squad,” criticized his refusal to call for a ceasefire. Representative Ilhan Omar (D-MN) condemned the bombing of a hospital as a war crime and urged Biden to push for an immediate end to the violence. Representative Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) accused Israel of killing hundreds of Palestinians.
Despite these criticisms, UCLA global studies lecturer Benjamin Radd argues that Biden emerges as the winner in both situations. Radd believes that excluding Arab leaders from the discussion actually benefits Biden, and the false hospital reports reflect poorly on the Squad members, further enhancing Biden’s image.
In his speech, Biden emphasized the importance of a safe return for hostages and highlighted President Harry S. Truman’s recognition of Israel as the first country to do so. He also compared the October 7 attacks to “15 9/11s” in terms of their impact on Israel’s smaller size compared to the United States.
While Republicans remain united in their support for Israel, they still found fault with Biden’s actions. Criticisms included his announcement of $100 million in aid for Gaza and the West Bank, which some labeled as support for Hamas. The Republican National Committee criticized the brevity of Biden’s trip, dubbing it “Biden’s drive-by in Israel.”
For Biden, this trip marks the continuation of a relationship with Israel that began 50 years ago when he first visited as a young senator. He was told by then-Prime Minister Golda Meir that the secret to the country’s resilience was that its residents had no other place to go.
Just as Biden is currently working to secure Republican support for additional Ukraine funding, he may also need to ensure Democratic unity regarding Israel. Radd believes that Biden is handling this task well, as his speech was both passionate and measured, appealing to the emotions on both sides of the conflict.

What challenges must be addressed in order to achieve sustainable peace in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and how is President Biden working towards resolving them
) tweeted, “Enough is enough. The occupation and the settlements continue to breed this violence. It’s time for President Biden to step up and put pressure on Israel to end this cycle of bloodshed.” However, Biden’s decision to not directly call for a ceasefire shows his commitment to his stance on supporting Israel.
The conflict in the region has intensified in the past week, with both Hamas and Israel launching air strikes and rocket attacks against each other. The fighting has resulted in casualties on both sides, with innocent civilians bearing the brunt of the violence.
A Longstanding Partnership
The United States and Israel have a longstanding partnership, with close ties in various sectors, including defense and intelligence. This relationship has been further reinforced during Biden’s presidency, as he has expressed his commitment to strengthening the bond between the two nations.
During his visit, Biden also addressed the ongoing Palestinian-Israeli conflict, acknowledging the suffering and loss experienced by both Palestinians and Israelis. He emphasized the need for a two-state solution, stating, “We need to get to a two-state solution. It’s the only answer.” However, he did not lay the blame solely on one side, recognizing the complexities of the situation. Biden highlighted the importance of dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the conflict.
Additionally, Biden expressed his support for Israel’s right to defend itself. He condemned the rocket attacks launched by Hamas and reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to Israel’s security. “Israel has a right to defend itself when you have thousands of rockets flying into your territory,” he stated.
Future Challenges and Prospects for Peace
As the conflict continues to escalate, the challenges of achieving lasting peace in the region become more apparent. The violence has resulted in the loss of innocent lives and the displacement of many Palestinians. While the international community calls for an immediate ceasefire, the underlying issues that fuel the conflict need to be addressed for sustainable peace to be achieved.
President Biden has expressed his commitment to working towards a resolution in the region and has appointed an envoy to focus on Israeli-Palestinian relations. In his speech, he outlined his vision for the future, stating, “We have a genuine prospect of making progress, and I’m committed to working towards achieving that goal.” Biden’s efforts to engage with all parties involved and seek a comprehensive solution illustrate his dedication to the pursuit of peace.
As the conflict unfolds, President Biden’s reaffirmation of support for Israel sends a strong message to both allies and adversaries. It signals the unwavering commitment of the United States to its longstanding partnership with Israel and its determination to work towards a resolution that ensures both Israeli security and Palestinian rights. The current situation poses formidable challenges, but with diplomacy, dialogue, and genuine commitment, there remains hope for a peaceful and prosperous future in the region.
