President Biden Celebrates Judicial Milestone and Pushes for Gender Equality
President Joe Biden reached a significant milestone this week with the confirmation of his 150th federal judge. Not only that, but he proudly highlighted the fact that two-thirds of his nominees are women. However, there is still work to be done to match the pace set by his predecessor.

According to the American Constitution Society, former President Trump appointed 234 federal judges, with 187 confirmed by the Senate by the end of his third year in office. To catch up, the Biden administration and the Democratic-led committee need to be “in sync,” as stated by University of Richmond law professor Carl Tobias.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Dick Durbin (D-IL) has promised to hold meetings every two weeks to address this issue. However, Tobias points out that part of the problem is the limited number of nominees who haven’t had a hearing yet.
More Female Judges on the Horizon
The Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on two additional female nominees this Thursday, Mustafa Taher Kasubhai and Eumi K. Lee. If confirmed, they will bring the total number of female judges appointed by Biden to 102, the highest in history. The White House is also proud to note that nearly two-thirds of Biden’s confirmations are people of color.
Tobias suggests that Biden should focus on making new nominations to the federal circuit courts if he wants to compete with Trump’s judicial legacy. So far, Biden has confirmed 36 appellate judges, with five awaiting confirmation votes. Trump, on the other hand, confirmed 54 by the end of his four-year term.
Appellate Courts: A Key Priority
While any appointment to a federal court is significant, appellate courts hold particular importance in shaping and influencing the judiciary. The liberal-leaning ACS has called on Durbin to lift the blue slip tradition to address Biden’s lag in appellate confirmations, arguing that it would prevent a single senator from obstructing the process.
