President Joe Biden is under fire after making a “joke” and comparing one of the deadliest United States Wildfire tragedies to almost losing his corvette and his cat.
On Monday, the 46th president and the first lady traveled to the most affected areas of Maui and met with local and community officials. They appeared in a news conference in Maui speaking about the tragic wildfires where Biden compared the tragedy to one time where he almost lost his car.
During his speech at the conference, the president said he knew how it felt to lose a home.
“I don’t want to compare difficulties but we have a little sense, Jill and I, of what it’s like to lose a home,” he said. “Years ago now, 15 years ago, I was in Washington doing Meet the Press. It was a sunny Sunday.”
“Lightning struck at home, on a little lake that’s outside of our home—not a lake, a big pond,—and hit a wire that came up underneath our home into the heating ducts and air conditioning ducts,” he added. “To make a long story short, I almost lost my wife, my ’67 Corvette, and my cat.”
The president was accused of being insensitive to the tragedy in Maui by many who did not understand the comparison.
Biden was also seen joking about how hot the ground was to a firefighter.
“You guys catch the boots out here? That’s a hot ground, man,” he joked.
So far, the devastating fire killed an estimated 480 individuals. Over 800 people are still missing.
Governor Josh Green (D-Hawaii) stated on Sunday that the majority of people missing are most likely children.
