President Joe Biden Breaks British Royal Protocol
During his visit to the United Kingdom, President Joe Biden made headlines by breaking British royal protocol. While outside Windsor Castle on Monday, Biden walked alongside King Charles III and placed his hand on the king’s back.
A Minor Infraction
In British royal tradition, it is considered improper to touch members of the royal family unless initiated by a royal family member. Although Biden’s action goes against this protocol, it is seen as a minor infraction.
A History of Protocol Breakers
Biden is not the first American to disregard this protocol. Former President Donald Trump faced similar accusations during a state banquet with Queen Elizabeth II in 2019. Even basketball superstar LeBron James and former first lady Michelle Obama have been seen breaking the protocol by engaging in physical contact with members of the royal family.
Biden’s Visit to the U.K.
This visit to the U.K. is significant as it marks President Biden’s first trip to the country since King Charles III’s coronation. It is part of his larger European tour, which includes the upcoming two-day NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania.
Biden had previously expressed his intention to visit the U.K. during a conversation with the king in May. Although he did not attend the coronation, first lady Jill Biden was present at the event.
