Biden’s lead over Trump grows as women support surges in latest poll
President Biden Leads Trump in New Poll, Thanks to Growing Gender Gap
According to a new national poll from Quinnipiac University, President Joe Biden is leading former President Donald Trump among registered voters. The poll, released on Wednesday, shows Biden with a 6-point lead over Trump in a hypothetical general election matchup, with Biden at 50% and Trump at 44%. This marks a significant shift from the previous poll in December 2023, which had the race too close to call at 47% for Biden and 46% for Trump.
The poll highlights a notable increase in support for Biden among female voters. In December, 53% of women said they supported the president, but that number has now risen to 58%.
“The gender demographic tells a story to keep an eye on,”
said Quinnipiac University polling analyst Tim Malloy.
“Propelled by female voters in just the past few weeks, the head-to-head tie with Trump morphs into a modest lead for Biden.”
This surge in female support for Biden comes shortly after Trump was ordered to pay $83.3 million in damages to E. Jean Carroll, a former Elle columnist who accused him of rape in the 1990s. The poll also reveals that Biden’s support among independents has grown since December, with 52% of independents now saying they would vote for him in a matchup this November.
While the numbers suggest that the 2024 election will be a rematch between Biden and Trump, there is another contender in the race. Former ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, is leading Biden 47% to 42% in a two-person contest, according to the poll.
“In a head-to-head matchup against Biden, Haley outperforms Trump, thanks to independents,”
stated Malloy.
Haley’s campaign emphasizes her strong support among independent voters, noting that she beats Biden by 16 points in that voting bloc, while Trump loses to Biden by 12 points. They suggest that Democrats are afraid of facing Haley in the election.
“The Democrats are salivating at the idea of running against Trump again and they’re terrified of running against Nikki Haley,”
said Haley national spokeswoman Olivia Perez-Cubas.
However, when third-party candidates are added to the hypothetical race between Haley and Biden, Haley’s numbers slip considerably. In a five-person race, Biden receives 36%, Haley receives 29%, independent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. receives 21%, independent Cornel West receives 3%, and Green Party candidate Jill Stein receives 2%.
The poll serves as a precursor to South Carolina’s Democratic primary this weekend, the first official contest in the Democrats’ presidential nominating cycle. Republicans will vote for their candidate next in Nevada, where Haley will appear on the primary ballot but not participate in the caucuses. Trump will not be on the primary ballot but will receive the state’s delegates for participating in the caucuses.
The Quinnipiac poll surveyed 1,650 self-identified registered voters from Thursday to Monday, with a margin of error of 2.4 percentage points.
What is the current level of support among male voters for President Biden compared to former President Trump?
Ort among male voters has remained relatively unchanged, with 43% of men backing him in both December and now.
While Biden’s growing lead is encouraging for his administration, it is important to note that the election is still far off and a lot can change in the coming months. However, this poll does offer valuable insights into the current state of public opinion regarding the two former presidents.
One of the key factors behind this shift in support is the impact of allegations against Trump, particularly in relation to women. The #MeToo movement and increased awareness of sexual assault and harassment have played a significant role in shaping public opinion and holding those in power accountable for their actions. The verdict against Trump in the E. Jean Carroll case has further reinforced this trend. Carroll’s accusation, coupled with other allegations against Trump, have resonated with female voters and influenced their perception of the former president.
Additionally, Biden’s consistent support for women’s rights and gender equality has bolstered his image as a leader who values and respects women. His administration has prioritized issues such as pay equity, reproductive rights, and addressing violence against women. These policy positions have resonated with female voters, who see Biden as more aligned with their values and concerns.
However, it is important to acknowledge that the gender gap in support for Biden is not solely due to Trump’s alleged misconduct. Other factors, such as differences in policy positions and party affiliation, also contribute to this divide. The Democratic Party has historically had stronger support among female voters, and this trend continues with Biden. Women are more likely to align with the Democratic Party on issues such as healthcare, education, and social justice.
Regardless of the reasons behind this growing gender gap, it is clear that Biden’s lead over Trump is contingent on maintaining support from female voters. In order to secure a victory in the next general election, Biden and his administration must continue to prioritize policies that resonate with women and address their concerns. This includes not only advancing women’s rights but also ensuring economic security, healthcare access, and opportunities for female empowerment.
As the political landscape evolves and new issues come to the forefront, it is essential for Biden to stay attuned to the needs and aspirations of women across the country. By doing so, he can continue to build upon his growing support among female voters and solidify his position as a leader who understands and advocates for their interests.
In conclusion, President Biden’s lead over former President Trump in the recent national poll can be attributed to a growing gender gap. The increased support among female voters is a reflection of both the impact of allegations against Trump and Biden’s continuous focus on women’s rights and gender equality. However, it is crucial for Biden to maintain and expand this support by addressing the concerns and priorities of women throughout his administration.
