Biden-appointed prosecutor’s rejection of Hunter case raises conflict of interest concerns.

U.S. Attorney Matthew ‍Graves: Addressing the Hunter Biden⁤ Case

U.S. Attorney Matthew ⁤Graves, appointed by President Joe Biden, faced scrutiny over his involvement ‌in a case against the president’s son. During a ‌closed-door interview with the House Judiciary Committee, Graves⁣ defended his position, stating that he saw no conflict of interest.

The Perception Problem

“But you understand the perception problem,” counsel for the committee told Graves. ⁤”You’re an appointee of President Biden, and, here, you’ve been asked to weigh in on a prosecution involving his son. I mean, ‌certainly, there’s an obvious perceived — at least the perceived conflict of interest,⁤ correct?”

Graves replied, “I don’t see it that way.”

Graves emphasized that investigations involving members of the administration were not uncommon for the Department of Justice. He did not consider the case against Hunter Biden to be a conflict of interest or a perceived conflict of interest.

Declining to Partner

In ‌late February⁢ or early March 2022, Graves was ⁤contacted by special counsel David Weiss ‌regarding the ongoing federal investigation into Hunter Biden. Weiss sought logistical assistance and potential collaboration on the case. However, ⁢Graves ultimately decided against partnering with Weiss, citing the complexities and additional management layers it ⁢would entail.

Graves maintained that he made it clear to⁤ Weiss that he could prosecute Hunter Biden⁤ in the Washington jurisdiction independently. Despite declining to partner, Graves had a few follow-up conversations with‍ Weiss, which he could not disclose due ‌to the ongoing nature of the case.

During the interview, ⁢Graves was also questioned about ⁢his past affiliations with Democratic campaigns. He countered by highlighting ‍his previous work for a Republican ‍state senator and his prosecution ⁢of ‌Democrats, including former Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr.

Critics have raised concerns about⁣ Graves’s alleged unfair prosecution of ‍defendants⁤ related to the Jan. ⁢6 Capitol riot and his wife’s position⁣ as the president of the left-leaning National Women’s Law Center. Additionally, his wife’s frequent visits to the White House while Graves ‌was presented ‌with the Hunter Biden case‌ have drawn attention.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene has called⁤ for Graves’s impeachment, while Rep. Matt ‌Gaetz has criticized Graves’s ties to the Biden family,⁢ referring to them ‍as the ⁣”Biden ‍Crime Family.”

Overall, concerns ‍about conflicts of interest have been raised⁤ regarding Attorney General Merrick Garland, Graves, and Weiss due to their perceived loyalty to the Biden family.
