The U.S. has imposed a new round of sanctions on the Cuban government in an effort to increase pressure on the communist regime. On Friday, the Biden administration announced new sanctions on the country’s National Revolutionary Police and two top security officials on the force.

The administration said the sanctions were made in response to authorities attempts to harm or silence protestors following ongoing demonstrations in Cuba. Earlier on Friday, Joe Biden met with members of the Cuban-American community and members of Congress at the White House.

“We’re going to continue to add sanctions on individuals that carry out the regime’s abuses,” said Biden.

Additionally, the administration has considered other response options, including assisting political dissidents and providing internet access to the Cuban people.
