President Biden Pledges Support for Job Opportunities for Illegal Immigrants in New York City

President Joe Biden‌ recently announced his commitment to helping illegal immigrants in New York City find employment opportunities, stating that ⁣entering America illegally should not be a barrier to getting a job.

Following a meeting with Democratic New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, ‌the White House issued a ⁢statement declaring September as a⁢ “month⁣ of action” to bridge the gap between noncitizens eligible for work authorization and those who have applied.

The Biden administration ‍plans to launch a national campaign providing information on how to apply for employment ⁢authorization to individuals who are work-eligible but have not yet applied for work authorization.

According to a Biden administration official, illegal immigrants must wait 150‌ days to seek a work permit and an⁢ additional 30 days to receive one.

To support these efforts,‌ the White House⁣ will be sending an‍ additional⁣ $100 million in aid‍ to New York in the coming weeks.

Opposing Views

Robert Law, a former senior official at U.S. Citizenship and⁢ Immigration Services in the Trump administration, expressed opposition to the push for illegal immigrants to enter the workforce. He criticized sanctuary jurisdictions for prioritizing the employment of⁢ illegal immigrants over ‌helping Americans find jobs.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams recently announced plans to send some of the 100,000 illegal ‌immigrants who have arrived in the city to ⁤federal sites in upstate New York. He emphasized that he will utilize any available space granted by the federal‍ government, regardless of local or state officials’ approval.

A letter from the Department of Homeland Security suggested housing 800 people at a‍ hanger at JFK International Airport.

Challenges and‌ Concerns

Several counties outside⁤ of New York City have implemented local‌ rules prohibiting hotels, motels, and similar businesses from⁤ housing illegal immigrants. Officials argue that upstate New York lacks the capacity to accommodate these individuals ⁢and that existing resources should be prioritized for local social services recipients.

Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, who‌ had previously⁤ supported housing illegal immigrants, changed his stance after two instances of ‍sexual assault involving illegal immigrants. He demanded a pause in transporting asylum-seekers to his community⁣ until security issues could be resolved.

The situation has sparked⁢ concerns about the lack of coordination and communication between the federal government, the state government, the city of New York, and the 57 counties, leading to a chaotic system.

Overall, ⁢President Biden’s administration is making a significant push to provide work permits and benefits for illegal aliens, aiming to address labor needs and improve job prospects for noncitizens in New ‌York City.
