Beto O’Rouke: Busing Illegals Out there of Texas a “Political Stunt”

Beto O’Rourke pushed back against a decision by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to bus migrants who arrive at the Texas border to Washington, D.C., calling it a “political stunt.”

The Democrat, who is running to unseat Abbott, said the plan has done “nothing to improve the safety and security” of Texans after several buses arrived in the nation’s capital. The governor is attempting to send a signal to politicians to address the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border.

“This is another political stunt that Greg Abbott has pulled off that has done nothing to improve the safety and security of Texas or the rest of the country,” O’Rourke said during an interview Sunday with MSNBC’s Jonathan Capehart.

O’Rourke also called into question the deployment of National Guard members to Texas’s border with Mexico as part of Abbott’s border security enforcement operation introduced last March. These agents have “no powers to arrest or detain.”

“Those guardsmen have taken their own lives since they’ve been activated, they’ve been taken away from their families, from their communities, from their kids,” O’Rourke said.

Four Texas guardsmen serving or set to serve under “Operation Lone Star” have died by suicide since the National Guard was activated, according to the Army Times.

Despite some of the challenges Texas has faced with an uptick in border crossings, O’Rourke backed the Biden administration’s plan to end a Trump-era coronavirus policy that allows for the quick deportation of thousands of migrants seeking asylum.

“Yes, it’s time to end Title 42. Let’s just make sure we’re doing it responsibly and that we’re doing it in partnership with the border communities who will bear the brunt of any policy changes coming from Washington, D.C.,” O’Rourke said.

O’Rourke will face Abbott in the general election on Nov. 8.
