Bessent orders Treasury investigation into possible diversion of Minnesota tax dollars to terrorists
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced Monday that the Treasury will launch an investigation into allegations of a Minnesota fraud scheme purportedly mishandled under Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN).
“At my direction, @USTreasury is investigating allegations that under the feckless mismanagement of the Biden Administration and Governor Tim Walz, hardworking Minnesotans’ tax dollars may have been diverted to the terrorist organization Al-Shabaab,” Bessent wrote on X.
His announcement comes after GOP leadership and President Donald Trump have raised concerns over a fraud scheme in the state in which dozens of people were indicted on charges of defrauding taxpayers through the Feeding Our Future nonprofit group. Many of these indicted Minnesotans were Somali asylum-seekers.
A City Journal report alleged millions of taxpayer dollars were siphoned through the scheme to the Somali-based Al-Shabaab terrorist group. On Nov. 21, Trump terminated temporary protected status for Somalis residing in Minnesota, citing the allegations of fraud in his Truth Social post.
“Thanks to the leadership of @POTUS @realDonaldTrump, we are acting fast to ensure Americans’ taxes are not funding acts of global terror. We will share our findings as our investigation continues,” Bessent continued in his .
In response to Trump terminating TPS for Minnesota Somalians, Walz wrote on X on Nov. 21, “It’s not surprising that the President has chosen to broadly target an entire community. This is what he does to change the subject.”
Walz took to X on Sunday, reposting a New York Times article about Trump pardoning a private equity executive convicted of wire fraud.

“Just to be clear: There will be no pardons for fraudsters in Minnesota,” Walz wrote Sunday.
Walz’s press team did not respond to the Washington Examiner’s requests for comment.
