Beloved Olympic Figure Skater, 31, Killed in Tragic Accident
Former Canadian Olympic figure skater Alexandra Paul tragically passed away last week in a multiple-vehicle crash. Despite the devastating accident, her 10-month-old son miraculously survived.
Paul, 31, was involved in a seven-vehicle chain reaction crash that occurred when a truck failed to slow down in a construction zone and collided with a line of vehicles about 70 miles north of Toronto, according to the New York Post.
While Paul tragically lost her life, three others were injured in the accident, as reported by the police.
Fortunately, Paul’s son sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a children’s hospital for treatment, according to the Canadian Press.
Paul and her then-future husband Mitchell Islam represented Canada at the 2014 Winter Olympics, where they placed 18th in the mixed ice dance event, as reported by the Post.

Paul and Islam achieved great success in figure skating, winning bronze medals at the Canadian national championships in 2011, 2014, and 2015. They retired from the sport in 2016 after earning a bronze medal at the US Classic International. The couple tied the knot in 2021.
Skate Canada expressed their grief over Paul’s passing, stating on Instagram, “It is with a heavy heart that Skate Canada announces the sudden passing of a cherished member of our skating community, Alexandra Paul.”

Skate Canada praised Paul’s dedication, passion, and remarkable talents, stating, “A shining star on and off the ice, Alexandra’s dedication, passion, and remarkable talents have left an indelible mark on the world of figure skating.”
Paul was not only an accomplished athlete but also a true role model for aspiring skaters, embodying the values of resilience, perseverance, and sportsmanlike conduct, according to Skate Canada.

After retiring from skating, Paul pursued a career in law and resided in Barrie, Ontario. Joanne McPhail, managing partner of Barriston Law, expressed the profound impact Paul had on her colleagues, saying, “The loss of Alex as a friend and colleague has been devastating to everyone at Barriston Law. She was kind, curious, and driven in every endeavor she pursued.”
