Boy, 7, Attacked by Bear in NY Backyard
A Brave Encounter: 7-Year-Old Boy Survives Bear Attack
In a shocking incident that unfolded in suburban New York, a 7-year-old boy had a terrifying encounter with a black bear right outside his family’s home. Despite sustaining non-life-threatening injuries, the young survivor’s bravery has left everyone in awe.
The incident occurred on a sunny Tuesday morning in Bedford, just 45 miles northeast of the bustling city of New York. The child, engrossed in play with his sibling in the backyard, suddenly found himself face-to-face with the bear’s aggression.
“The response from the boy’s parents was nothing short of extraordinary,” said North Castle Police Chief Peter Simonsen in an interview with News 12 Westchester.
Carlos Cano, the chief of the Armonk Fire Department, shared with The New York Times that the boy’s mother, a doctor, swiftly tended to his wounds before emergency workers arrived. The young survivor was immediately rushed to the hospital for further care and observation.
Meanwhile, the bear remained in the vicinity, posing an ongoing threat. In response, the North Castle police took decisive action, with an officer shooting the bear. The wounded animal was then taken away for rabies testing.
While bear populations are on the rise in New York state, incidents of bear attacks on humans remain rare. However, neighboring Connecticut has witnessed three bear attacks in the past year alone, including a harrowing incident in October 2022 when a 10-year-old boy was mauled in his grandparents’ backyard.
