‘Barbie’ banned in Kuwait, possible ban in Lebanon due to alleged promotion of homosexuality.
The Controversial Barbie Movie: Banned in Kuwait and Facing Potential Bans in the Middle East
The highly anticipated “Barbie” movie has stirred up controversy in the Middle East, leading to its ban in Kuwait and the possibility of being forbidden in other parts of the region. Government officials claim that the film “promotes homosexuality” and carries “ideas that encourage unacceptable behavior.”
Directed by Greta Gerwig, the film has been labeled as “preachy” and “man-hating” by critics like Bill Maher. As a result, it will not be screened in theaters in Kuwait and may also face a ban in Lebanon, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The decision to ban “Barbie” in Kuwait was made to protect “public ethics and social traditions,” as stated by officials, while the chairman of Kuwait’s film censorship committee, Lafi Al-Subaie, accused the film of promoting unacceptable behavior and distorting society’s values.

In Lebanon, cultural minister Mohammad Mortada also took steps to ban the film, citing its promotion of “homosexuality and sexual transformation” and its contradiction of values related to faith and morality. Mortada’s actions prompted Interior Minister Bassam Mawlawi to request a review of the film by General Security’s censorship committee, with expectations that it will also be banned.
Contrary to earlier reports, the movie will still be released in larger markets like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates on August 10.
Interestingly, Vietnam has already banned the film due to its depiction of a South China Sea map, which has been a contentious issue between Vietnam and China. The movie includes a U-shaped “nine-dash line” in the South China Sea, which Vietnamese officials found offensive.
