Roughly 36 Hours After Baltimore Shooting, Authorities Share New Details

Just over a day after a tragic shooting at a block party in Baltimore claimed two lives and left 28 others injured, authorities have provided updates on the incident and continue to search for suspects.

During a press conference on Monday, officials urged the public to come forward with any information related to the mass shooting in the Brooklyn Homes neighborhood. They also announced various support programs for the community in Maryland.

Community Support and Investigation

“We are doing everything in our power to ensure that the horrific violence that occurred this weekend is not repeated either in Brooklyn or in any other neighborhood across Baltimore,” said Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott.

Acting Baltimore City Police Commissioner Richard Worley stated that detectives are currently interviewing witnesses and reviewing video footage from the “Brooklyn Day” celebration, which was attended by hundreds of people.

Worley revealed that multiple weapons and casings were recovered at the scene. He emphasized that anyone who had weapons at the block party, including a young man seen in social media video footage brandishing a semi-automatic gun, is considered a suspect until authorities determine otherwise.

“Right now, our detectives are still working through interviewing every one of the victims,” Worley explained. “We will continue to pursue any leads, which is why we need the help from the community. There is much more video out there that we have to look at.”

As of press time, officials have not released a motive or any identifying information about suspects.

Reward for Information

A “Metro Crime Stoppers” poster issued on Monday displayed photos of the two victims, 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi and 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez, who lost their lives in the shooting. The poster also announced a reward of up to $28,000 for information leading to arrests and charges, with the assistance of the FBI and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Among the 28 victims who were wounded, 15 were between the ages of 13 and 17, while the remaining 13 were between 18 and 32 years old.

During the press conference, Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott provided an update on the victims’ conditions. He stated that seven victims are still hospitalized, with four in critical condition.

Stefanie Mavronis, interim director of the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Safety and Engagement (MONSE), revealed that her staff had deescalated several conflicts earlier in the evening but were not present at the time of the shooting.

Questions and Investigation

Commissioner Worley faced questions regarding the absence of officers at such a large event. He explained that the event did not have a permit, and the police were unaware of its occurrence until hours before the shooting.

Worley denied that staffing was an issue, stating that officers could have been deployed to the location. He also mentioned that a review is underway to identify any shortcomings in the response.

When asked about potential communication breakdowns among city officials, Mayor Scott emphasized that they would investigate every aspect but would not shift blame onto any organization.

Addressing Gun Violence

Mayor Scott characterized gun violence as a “public health challenge” that requires the same level of attention as the COVID pandemic. He expressed concern about gun trafficking across state lines, the presence of “ghost guns,” and the lack of smart technology on firearms.
