Audio Confirms Kevin McCarthy Planned to Tell Trump to Resign After Jan 6
MSNBC host Rachel Maddow played an audio recording of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy saying that he would urge former President Donald Trump to resign after the Capitol riot.
Maddow played the recording of McCarthy telling a group of Republicans on Jan. 10, 2021, that he would recommend that Trump resign from the presidency after the events at the Capitol during The Rachel Maddow Show on Thursday evening. McCarthy has previously denied that he said this.
“I’m seriously thinking of having that conversation with him tonight. I haven’t talked to him in a couple of days,” McCarthy said in response to a question from Wyoming Republican Rep. Liz Cheney about whether Trump might resign as the impeachment resolution was set to pass.
MCCARTHY WON’T COMMIT TO BIDEN IMPEACHMENT
“The only discussion I would have with him is that I think this will pass, and it would be my recommendation you should resign,” McCarthy said during the conversation. “I’ve had it with this guy. What he did was unacceptable. Nobody can defend that and nobody should defend it,” he adds near the end of the conversation.
The New York Times reported in an adaption of This Will Not Pass: Trump, Biden and the Battle for America’s Future, by Jonathan Martin and Alex Burns, two reporters with the outlet, that McCarthy had said this.
McCarthy’s office denied the reports that the California politician had said this. “McCarthy never said he’d call Trump to say he should resign,” Mark Bednar, a spokesman for McCarthy, said. When asked again whether McCarthy had said he would push Trump to resign, Bednar again said he had not said that, Maddow revealed during her show.

“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters,” McCarthy said from the House floor days after the Jan. 6 Capitol attack. “He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action by President Trump.”
Days after President Joe Biden had been inaugurated, McCarthy met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. The two struck a deal to work together to help Republicans win back the House majority.
The Washington Examiner has reached out to McCarthy’s office for comment.
