AT&T outage blamed on technical glitch, no cyberattack detected
AT&T Outage Caused by Technical Error, Not Cyberattack
AT&T has revealed that the widespread outage that affected thousands of customers across the country was not the result of a cyberattack, but rather a technical error. The incident caused service disruptions and even impacted emergency services in certain states. At its peak, over 74,000 customers were left without service. Fortunately, full service was restored by 3 p.m. ET.
In a statement released on Thursday evening, AT&T stated, “Based on our initial review, we believe that today’s outage was caused by the application and execution of an incorrect process used as we were expanding our network, not a cyberattack. We are continuing our assessment of today’s outage to ensure we keep delivering the service that our customers deserve.”
The exact number of affected customers is still being determined, but Downdetector, the online platform that first detected the outage, reported that approximately 1.7 million AT&T customers were impacted.
Customers of other carriers, such as Verizon and T-Mobile, also experienced outages, although not to the same extent as AT&T. Representatives from these companies suggested that the reported outages may have been caused by their customers attempting to reach AT&T customers.
Investigations Underway
The outages have caught the attention of national security agencies, with the FBI and Department of Homeland Security currently looking into the matter. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has also been made aware of the situation and is actively investigating.
The FCC posted on X, “We are aware of the reported wireless outages, and our Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau is actively investigating. We are in touch with AT&T and public safety authorities, including FirstNet, as well as other providers.”

How does academic honesty affect the credibility and reputation of educational institutions?
Academic honesty plays a crucial role in shaping the credibility and reputation of educational institutions. Here are some ways in which it affects them:
1. Upholding reputation: Academic honesty ensures that educational institutions maintain a reputation for integrity and reliability. When students and faculty adhere to high ethical standards in their academic work, it enhances the institution’s credibility and trustworthiness.
2. Building trust: Academic honesty fosters trust among students, faculty, and external stakeholders. Educational institutions that have a strong culture of integrity are more likely to gain the trust of prospective students, parents, employers, and the general public.
3. Quality of graduates: Academic dishonesty undermines the quality of education and the learning outcomes of students. When institutions allow cheating or plagiarism, it devalues the achievements of those who have earned their credentials honestly. This can harm the reputation of the institution and diminish the value of its graduates.
4. Institutional rankings: Many educational institutions are ranked based on various factors, including academic reputation. The prevalence of academic dishonesty can negatively impact these rankings, as it raises questions about the quality and integrity of the institution. A tarnished reputation can lead to a decline in rankings, thereby affecting the institution’s standing among peer institutions.
5. Long-term impact: The reputation of an educational institution is built over time through a consistent display of academic integrity. Academic dishonesty incidents, if not addressed effectively, can have long-term consequences on the institution’s reputation and credibility. Negative incidents tend to overshadow positive achievements, putting the institution at risk of losing credibility in the eyes of potential stakeholders.
6. Institutional partnerships and collaborations: Educational institutions often collaborate with other institutions, organizations, or industry partners. In such collaborations, credibility and integrity are paramount. Academic honesty ensures that these partnerships thrive and are based on a foundation of trust and mutual respect.
In conclusion, academic honesty is a fundamental element contributing to the credibility and reputation of educational institutions. Upholding integrity not only benefits individual students but also ensures the long-term sustainability of the institution, its relationships, and its overall standing in the academic community.
