Arkansas triumphs over No. 7 Duke post-poll drop
November 29, 2023 – 9:19 PM PST
Khalif Battle scored 21 points off the bench and Arkansas put together a much-needed 80-75 victory against No. 7 Duke on Wednesday night at Fayetteville, Ark.
Trevon Brazile, who made four 3-point baskets, posted 19 points and 11 rebounds for Arkansas (5-3). The Razorbacks bounced back after losing their final two games — to Memphis and North Carolina — in the Battle 4 Atlantis last week in the Bahamas. The losses bumped Arkansas from the Top 25.
Battle poured in 13 points during a four-minute span of the second half when the Razorbacks pulled away. Brazile’s 3-pointer stretched the gap to 73-61 with 2:18 to play.
Kyle Filipowski supplied 26 points and 10 rebounds, Jeremy Roach had 22 points, and Jared McCain grabbed 10 rebounds for Duke (5-2), which was in its first true road game of the season.
The Blue Devils shot 6-for-22 on 3-pointers as their four-game winning streak ended.
Duke got within 75-71 with 47 seconds left and with 78-75 at the 18-second mark. Davonte Davis and Battle then each made a free throw for Arkansas to put the game away.
Arkansas did all this without guard Tramon Mark, who suffered a back injury late in Friday’s loss after scoring 34 points. He didn’t play Wednesday.
The Razorbacks used an 11-2 run to create a 55-45 lead. Battle had seven of the points during that stretch.
The margin grew to 60-47 shortly after the midway mark of the second half as Duke went cold while Arkansas continued to hit its shots.
Arkansas led 33-32 at halftime, slowed at times by Duke’s zone defense that may have been a byproduct of the Blue Devils’ foul trouble. The Razorbacks made 40 percent of their shots from the floor in the first half while the Blue Devils shot 34.5 percent from the field.
The largest lead of the half was three points, which both teams achieved.
Filipowski, held to three points before halftime, picked up two fouls five minutes into the game. Less than five minutes later, reserve Ryan Young joined him with two fouls and soon after he had his third. That resulted in Christian Reeves on the court for his first action since Nov. 10.
Arkansas was charged with eight first-half fouls, but only one picked up by a starter. Duke had nine, five by starters.

Article Title: Arkansas Razorbacks Secure Much-Needed Victory Against Duke Blue Devils
Date: November 29, 2023
The Arkansas Razorbacks basketball team scored a crucial 80-75 victory against the No. 7 Duke Blue Devils on Wednesday night. The game took place at Bud Walton Arena in Fayetteville, Arkansas, and it marked a significant turning point for the Razorbacks after suffering back-to-back losses in the Battle 4 Atlantis tournament.
Khalif Battle, who came off the bench, played a pivotal role in securing the win for Arkansas with an impressive 21-point performance. Trevon Brazile also played a key role, contributing 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Razorbacks. Their combined efforts helped Arkansas bounce back from recent setbacks and regain their momentum.
The Razorbacks took control of the game in the second half, with Battle scoring 13 points in just four minutes, allowing the team to pull away from the Blue Devils. Brazile’s three-pointer further extended their lead to 73-61 with only 2:18 left on the clock.
Despite a strong effort from Duke, where Kyle Filipowski scored 26 points and Jeremy Roach added 22 points, their shooting struggled particularly from the three-point line, going 6-for-22. This was a significant factor contributing to the end of their four-game winning streak.
Duke managed to narrow the gap to 75-71 with less than a minute remaining and even made it 78-75 with 18 seconds left. However, Arkansas held their ground, and both Davonte Davis and Battle made crucial free throws in the closing seconds to secure the victory.
What made this win even more impressive for Arkansas was the absence of Tramon Mark, who suffered a back injury in the previous game and was unable to play against Duke. Despite this setback, the Razorbacks demonstrated their depth and resilience, utilizing an 11-2 run to establish a 55-45 lead, with Battle leading the charge.
The Razorbacks’ dominance carried over into the second half, expanding their lead to 60-47, as Duke struggled to find their rhythm. Arkansas’s solid shooting performance and Duke’s foul trouble contributed to their advantage.
At halftime, Arkansas held a slender one-point lead of 33-32, with both teams dealing with the challenges posed by their opponent’s defense. Duke resorted to a zone defense to disrupt the Razorbacks, while Arkansas showcased their shooting efficiency.
The victory against Duke not only provided relief for Arkansas but also showcased their ability to overcome adversity. It served as a reminder of their potential as a competitive team, capable of competing against top-ranked opponents.
In conclusion, the Arkansas Razorbacks’ much-needed victory against the Duke Blue Devils showcased their resilience and determination. The standout performances by Khalif Battle and Trevon Brazile propelled the Razorbacks to success, while Duke’s struggles from the three-point line contributed to their defeat. Although Arkansas played without Tramon Mark, their depth and teamwork were evident. This victory marks a turning point for the Razorbacks and reestablishes their position as a competitive force in college basketball.
