Argentina began evacuating over 1,400 citizens from Israel amidst the ongoing Hamas attacks.
As the country with the largest Jewish population in Latin America, Argentina has announced plans to evacuate 1,419 Argentinians from Israel to Rome.
Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero addressed the press, stating that with the assistance of the Air Force’s Hercules C-130 aircraft, the Defense Ministry, and Aerolíneas Argentinas, they will be conducting the evacuation.
“With the work of the Defence Ministry and Aerolíneas Argentinas, we will start an air bridge from Tel Aviv and Rome,” he said.
He further mentioned that his ministry is collaborating with the AMIA Jewish community center and private initiatives to expedite the evacuation process.
According to the Foreign Ministry, there are currently 1,419 registered nationals waiting to return from Israel, and the government aims to bring them home “as soon as possible.”
Cafiero announced on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, that the first plane carrying a group of 49 Argentinians had safely arrived in Rome. They will receive assistance at the embassy and temporary shelter before returning to Argentina.
Cafiero also assured the press that his priority is to bring all Argentines back.
He also revealed that an Armed Forces Boeing 737 has been added to expedite the evacuation process.
While only 49 people boarded the first flight from Tel Aviv, General Jorge Becerro stated that the goal is to increase that number to 210 individuals daily, which is why they requested a second aircraft from the Air Force.
Operation Safe Return, as named by the government, will transport all Argentines who requested evacuation on at least three daily flights from Tel Aviv to Italy, with the evacuees returning to Argentina via Aerolíneas Argentinas flights.
According to the Argentinian Foreign Ministry, at least seven Argentinians have been killed and 15 others are still missing.
Meanwhile, criticism has been directed towards President Joe Biden for the lack of plans to evacuate American citizens from Israel.
Ximena Barreto, External Affairs Director, expressed disappointment on X, stating that it is “disappointing to see @POTUS inaction on helping stranded American citizens in Israel. While less privileged countries like Argentina and Mexico are actively rescuing their citizens.”
