The Associated Press Partners with OpenAI to Harness the Power of AI

The Associated Press (AP) announced on Thursday that it has entered into a groundbreaking two-year agreement with OpenAI, an artificial intelligence (AI) company. This collaboration aims to leverage the AP’s extensive news archive and OpenAI’s technological expertise.

This partnership marks one of the first alliances between a major news agency and AI, highlighting the increasing popularity of this transformative technology in businesses worldwide. Axios reported that OpenAI will gain access to a portion of the AP’s text archives dating back to 1985, while the AP will benefit from the AI algorithm’s insights. The details of the agreement are still being finalized.

The AP sees this collaboration as an opportunity to take the lead in developing standards for newsrooms utilizing generative AI. Generative AI refers to systems that can generate their own text or other media in response to prompts.

Ensuring Intellectual Property Protection and Fair Compensation

“AP firmly supports a framework that will ensure intellectual property is protected and content creators are fairly compensated for their work,” said AP Senior Vice President and Chief Revenue Officer Kristin Heitmann. “News organizations must have a seat at the table to ensure this happens, so that newsrooms large and small can leverage this technology to benefit journalism.”

OpenAI’s Chief Operating Officer, Brad Lightcap, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stating that the AP’s feedback and access to their high-quality, factual text archive will enhance the capabilities and usefulness of OpenAI’s systems.

In March, OpenAI unveiled its latest model, GPT-4, which showcased impressive problem-solving and image recognition abilities. The company claims that GPT-4 exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks, although it is still less capable than humans in many real-world scenarios.

The AP has been utilizing automated technology in its reporting for nearly a decade, starting with automating corporate earnings reports and expanding to cover college sports and even minor league baseball. Through this partnership with OpenAI, the AP aims to explore the potential applications of generative AI in its news coverage.
