Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) held a town hall in her New York congressional district where she pushed back on the Trump administration‘s crackdown on illegal immigration, challenging the administration’s border czar to “come for me.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s fiery town hall in Queens included her response to Trump border czar Tom Homan’s warning to people attempting to help illegal immigrants avoid deportation. Homan had suggested that actions, such as the “Squad” Democrat’s “Know Your Rights” webinar earlier this year, may be illegal and could lead to referral to the Justice Department.
“Tom Homan said he was going to refer me to DOJ because I’m using my free speech rights in order to advise people of their constitutional protections. To that I say: Come for me, do I look like I care?” Ocasio-Cortez said at the Friday town hall.
In her defense of the webinar, she added that there was “nothing illegal about it and if they want to make it illegal, they can come take me.”
Ocasio-Cortez has been on a nationwide “Fight Oligarchy” tour with Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) as they aim to counter President Donald Trump early in his second term. Despite her popularity within the party, particularly among progressives, and ability to attract crowds outside her district, she still received some pushback at her own Friday event.
A protester interrupted Ocasio-Cortez’s town hall demanding answers about the war between Hamas and Israel in Gaza, calling it a “genocide.”
“I am a healthcare worker and I want to know what you’re doing about the genocide in Gaza!” the woman yelled at Ocasio-Cortez.
The crowd began booing the protester and yelled “shame” at her while the New York congresswoman tried to calm her down. The protester then continued yelling about Gaza and calling Ocasio-Cortez a “liar.”
“You’re a war criminal. War criminal. War criminal,” the woman yelled as she exited the venue.
Ocasio-Cortez has been one of the most critical voices in Congress against Israel in its war against Hamas in Gaza.
