Media Call Canadian Trans Shooter By His Preferred Pronouns
The Federalist article by Shawn Fleetwood criticizes how mainstream media covered a Canadian school shooting in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, where 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, who identified as a woman, is alleged to have killed eight people and injured many others. Fleetwood argues that outlets quickly used female pronouns and described the suspect as a transgender woman, arguing that the media prioritized pronoun usage and gender identity over reporting facts and honoring victims. He cites numerous examples from major outlets—Associated Press, The New York Times, Newsweek, CNN, People, CBC, ABC Australia, The Guardian, Reuters, and others—claiming they referred to the suspect with “her” or “Ms.” and framed the story within a transgender-focused narrative. The piece portrays this as part of a broader pattern of media bias and “trans insanity,” rather than objective reporting. The article also includes the author’s bio and lists related topics and tags.
Innocent civilians are dead at the hands of another alleged trans-identifying killer. And as per usual, media propagandists’ biggest concern is whether they’re referring to him with the correct pronouns.
Canadian law enforcement revealed on Wednesday the identity of the 18-year-old suspect (Jesse Van Rootselaar) allegedly responsible for killing at least eight and injuring dozens more in a school shooting on Tuesday. They also revealed that this young man “identified” as a woman.
Without missing a beat, so-called “journalists” moved quickly to display their subservience to radical gender ideology by making sure they referred to the male alleged killer as a female.
In the opening graph of their article on the male suspect, the Associated Press’s Jim Morris and Rob Gillies dutifully wrote, “The suspect in a Canada school shooting was an 18-year-old who had a history of police visits to her home to check on her mental health, authorities said Wednesday. …” (emphasis added).
The New York Times’ Matina Stevis-Gridneff and Vjosa Isai followed in similarly disgusting fashion. On the Times’ “updates” page on the shooting, the writers referred to the suspect as “Ms. Van Rootselaar” and repeatedly used “she” and “her” when referencing Van Rootselaar.
Newsweek and CNN also joined in on promoting the left’s trans insanity, with each outlet calling Van Rootselaar a “transgender woman” and “female,” respectively. People magazine’s Becca Longmire similarly referred to the suspected shooter as a “female” in the headline for her article and as a “woman” in the piece’s body.
“Female Identified as Suspect in Worst Canada School Shooting in Decades That Killed 9 and Injured at Least 25,” the People article headline reads. (Initial reports of nine dead were later revised to eight.)
It wasn’t solely U.S.-based outlets that partook in such disgraceful theatrics, either.
The Canadian Broadcasting Corporation referred to the suspect as “her,” while the Australian Broadcasting Corporation called the alleged killer a “woman,” “her,” and “herself.”
Meanwhile, the U.K.-based Guardian reported on details about the suspect’s gun ownership. The problem? The left-wing outlet used female pronouns when referring to the alleged shooter.
“The suspect had a firearms license that had expired in 2024 and did not currently have any firearms registered to her,” The Guardian’s “live blog” page reads.
Reuters, another British outlet, was also among those to call Van Rootselaar a “woman” and use female pronouns when talking about him.
