An 18-year-old Loyola University student was walking with her friends in a park early Thursday morning to “catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights” when an illegal alien reportedly approached her with a gun. Sheridan Gorman tried to run, but Jose Medina-Medina allegedly shot and killed her.
Gorman appears to be another victim in a long list of individuals who should — and could — be alive today if not for Democrats’ suicidal immigration policies.
Medina-Medina was apprehended at the border on May 9, 2023, but was “released into the country under the Biden administration,” according to the Department of Homeland Security. Less than two months later, Medina-Medina was “released again on June 19, 2023, following an arrest for shoplifting in Chicago, Illinois.”
Upon his illegal entry, Medina-Medina should have faced the consequence of immediate deportation. Even if Medina-Medina wanted to file an asylum claim, law enforcement should have forced him to remain in Mexico while his claim was pending, as had been the policy under President Donald Trump. But the Biden administration rescinded the Remain in Mexico policy, and migrants encountered at the border were largely released into the country with merely a notice to appear before one of the many backlogged immigration judges.
According to a 2024 report by the Committee on House Oversight, the Biden administration “failed to remove most of the illegal aliens encountered during Joe Biden’s presidency.”
Medina-Medina should have then been deported by the Biden administration after he allegedly shoplifted just six weeks after his illegal entry. But Chicago’s sanctuary policies limit local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. The city’s Welcoming City Ordinance prohibits local authorities from voluntarily sharing information about a person’s immigration status with federal immigration officers.
“Except as otherwise provided under applicable federal law, no agent or agency shall disclose information regarding the citizenship or immigration status of any person unless required to do so by legal process or such disclosure has been authorized in writing by the individual to whom such information pertains,” the ordinance says.
Notably, Illinois is also one of several states that refuse to honor ICE detainer requests. Under the state’s TRUST Act, “a law enforcement agency or law enforcement official shall not detain or continue to detain any individual solely on the basis of any immigration detainer or civil immigration warrant or otherwise comply with an immigration detainer or civil immigration warrant.”
Just this past December, ICE Director Todd Lyons urged Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul to honor the detainer requests for more than 4,000 illegal aliens in the state’s custody, “including murderers, sexual predators, and those convicted of or charged with weapons offenses.”
Sadly, Gorman is not the only American whose life was cut short because of Democrats’ policies.
Venezuelan national Jose Antonio Ibarra murdered 22-year-old Laken Riley in February of 2024 while she was out for a jog on her college campus. Ibarra illegally crossed the southern border just two years prior and, under Biden’s catch-and-release policy, U.S. Customs and Border Patrol allowed him into the interior of the country. Authorities later arrested Ibarra for child endangerment in New York City (a sanctuary city). ICE said in an official statement that Ibarra “was released by the NYPD before a detainer could be issued.”
The House Judiciary Committee released a report finding that Ibarra’s release and freedom were the direct result of the Biden administration’s open border policies.
Victor Martinez-Hernandez raped and murdered Rachel Morin, a mother of five, and left her body in a storm drain on a trail in August 2023. The Salvadoran national had previously been apprehended and deported three times in 2023 while Title 42 was still in place. Title 42 allowed the Trump administration to deport illegal aliens under the guise of a public health emergency. Martinez-Hernandez reentered the country again but was this time released into the interior, according to DHS.
Similarly, 12-year-old Jocelyn Nungaray was sexually assaulted and strangled to death under a Houston bridge, allegedly by Venezuelan nationals Johan Jose Martinez-Rangel and Franklin Jose Peña Ramos. Both men had crossed into the country illegally just weeks prior to the alleged murder and were released into the country with notices to appear before a court at a later date. One made a credible fear claim.
As a House report found, “The Biden administration ended policies and practices that could have prevented these tragedies.”
